(Photo Credit Supplied by West Fraser)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Earlier this year, West Fraser&nbsp;<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cbc.ca\/news\/canada\/british-columbia\/quesnel-west-fraser-curtail-mill-1.6740592\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">halted operations at Cariboo Pulp &amp; Paper in Quesnel<\/a>&nbsp;as the Vancouver-based company devised a plan for its future.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>At the time, the company said the decision resulted from a decline in sawmill residuals&#8217; availability, which it says is due to infestation, fire and government policy decisions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The company&nbsp;<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/biv.com\/article\/2023\/07\/west-fraser-posts-173m-loss-2b-revenue\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">posted a USD 173 million second-quarter loss<\/a>&nbsp;in July, attributing much of its falling profitability to a weak pulp and paper market.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;Declining pulp prices led to a significant inventory write-down,&#8221; West Fraser said. &#8220;As a result, our pulp and paper segment experienced higher losses than expected.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>On Friday, West Fraser CEO Ray Ferris said the pulp mill sale will help the company focus on its wood-building products business.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;We believe this transaction provides these two great assets and teams a strong strategic future while allowing West Fraser to focus our resources on our objective to be the premier wood-building products company in North America,&#8221; Mr Ferris said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Mr Ferris, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.woodworkingnetwork.com\/news\/canadian-news\/west-fraser-announces-leadership-transition#:~:text=VANCOUVER%2C%20B.C.%20%E2%80%93%20West%20Fraser%20President%20and%20CEO,of%20president%20and%20CEO%20effective%20Jan.%201%2C%202024.\">who will step down as CEO and President of the company in favour of Sean McLaren in early 2024<\/a>, has driven the push to high-volume production. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>West Fraser is the world&#8217;s largest producer of oriented strand boards &#8211; or OSB &#8211; an engineered mass timber product growing in popularity due to its cost-effectiveness and sustainable production.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-rich is-provider-twitter wp-block-embed-twitter\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\"><p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">A chance to look inside West Fraser (Norbord) factory at Inverness.<br><br>It produces 16,000,000 sheets of OSB (Oriented Strand Board) every year. <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/BsrUUdQix4\">https:\/\/t.co\/BsrUUdQix4<\/a><\/p>&mdash; Andrew Heald (@andyheald) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/andyheald\/status\/1489220771591475209?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">February 3, 2022<\/a><\/blockquote><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>As a substitute for plywood, OSB uses longer and coarser wood to increase mechanical strength and water resistance by compressing layers of wood stands with adhesive to ensure consistent density and waterproofing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>OSB is frequently used in light steel frame house construction and is a material with favourable mechanical properties that make it particularly suitable for load-bearing applications in construction.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It is now more popular than plywood, commanding 66% of the North American structural panel market. Footage courtesy of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/@buildshow\">@buildshow<\/a>.<\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>At the time, Mr Ferris said, &#8220;Norbord&#8217;s OSB production is a perfect complement to the West Fraser portfolio, enabling us to deliver a wider range of wood products and making us a more complete, efficient and valuable partner for our customers.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;The Norbord business will also bring additional geographic diversity and an expanded opportunity set from its well-established positions in the United Kingdom and Western Europe.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/woodcentral.com.au\/canfors-200m-ai-powered-plant-drives-high-value-wood-products\/\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">The news follows Monday&#8217;s announcement&nbsp;<\/a>that Canfor ended months of speculation by announcing&nbsp;<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.thestar.com\/business\/canfor-to-build-new-manufacturing-facility-after-closure-of-houston-b-c-sawmill\/article_deb88b11-fe61-589b-913b-19c1dd384ec5.html\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">its investment in a state-of-the-art sawmill&nbsp;<\/a>that produces high-value products to withstand market downturns.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Significantly, Wood Central understands that the new mill will produce about two-thirds of what the previous mill made \u2014 and will be flexible enough to manufacture different wood products based on market demands.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The push to flexible production comes amid a crash in the global pulp and paper markets,&nbsp;<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/woodcentral.com.au\/canfor-west-fraser-timber-post-losses-amid-weak-pulp-market\/\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">leading the world&#8217;s largest forest companies to write off significant financial losses.<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It provides integrated forest companies with the most significant opportunity to de-risk investment&nbsp;<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/woodcentral.com.au\/timber-build-of-the-future-ai-robots-4d-printing-in-action\/\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">using AI and automation to improve economies of scale.<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>With demand for timber expected to quadruple by 2050, governments are now looking to retrofit &#8216;legacy&#8217; sawmills to produce higher-value wood products.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Speaking at a Resources Minister breakfast yesterday, British Columbia&#8217;s Resources Minister, Bruce Ralston, said of the importance of supporting small and medium-sized manufacturers in the transition.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In February 2023, the province unveiled its CA $180m<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www2.gov.bc.ca\/gov\/content\/employment-business\/economic-development\/support-organizations-community-partners\/rural-economic-development\/manufacturing-jobs-fund\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">&nbsp;&#8220;BC Manufacturing Jobs Fund,&#8221;&nbsp;<\/a>which helps &#8220;manufacturing companies modernise, innovate, and grow by funding capital projects in all regions.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Under the program, &#8220;there is a strong focus on helping the forestry sector retrofit and develop new, sustainable value-added business lines that reduce dependency on old-growth logging and make innovative use of biomaterials,&#8221; Minister Ralston said.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>West Fraser, one of the world&#8217;s largest integrated forestry companies, has sold two pulp mills in a move&nbsp;that underpins a global shift from low-value, high-volume products to more flexible, higher-value production.
