{"id":11353,"date":"2023-10-04T10:55:48","date_gmt":"2023-10-03T23:55:48","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/woodcentral.com.au\/?p=11353"},"modified":"2024-10-21T20:27:39","modified_gmt":"2024-10-21T10:27:39","slug":"king-charles-tours-the-circular-timber-plant-using-balmoral-wood","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/woodcentral.com.au\/king-charles-tours-the-circular-timber-plant-using-balmoral-wood\/","title":{"rendered":"King Charles Tours the &#8216;Circular&#8217; Timber Plant Using Balmoral Wood"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>King Charles III visited the<a href=\"https:\/\/www.jamesjones.co.uk\/\"> James Jones and Sons<\/a> sawmill in Aberdeenshire, Scotland, with the processor sourcing more than 150,000 tonnes of certified timber from the Balmoral Estate&#8217;s 1200 hectares of productive forests.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The visit demonstrated the value of productive forestry, the circularity of forest products, the importance of tree planting to meet future demand for housing and the UK&#8217;s net-zero climate commitments.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>James Jones and Sons sawmills are among Europe&#8217;s most efficient timber processing facilities, with its Timber Systems Division now the UK&#8217;s largest manufacturer of certified I-Joists, known as JJI-Joists.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The 180-year-old, fifth-generation timber conglomerate operates more than 27 sites across the UK, employs more than 1250 staff and has annual sales of over 330 million pounds annually.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Today, JJI-Joists has a 45% share of the I-Joist market, has extensive Laminated Veneer Lumber (LVL) and Glue-Laminated Timber (GLT) capacity and is used by all major housebuilders across the UK.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image alignwide size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"500\" height=\"375\" src=\"https:\/\/woodcentral.com.au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/10\/Aboyne-Drone-500x375-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-11357\" srcset=\"https:\/\/woodcentral.com.au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/10\/Aboyne-Drone-500x375-1.jpg 500w, https:\/\/woodcentral.com.au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/10\/Aboyne-Drone-500x375-1-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/woodcentral.com.au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/10\/Aboyne-Drone-500x375-1-80x60.jpg 80w, https:\/\/woodcentral.com.au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/10\/Aboyne-Drone-500x375-1-265x198.jpg 265w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">The Aboyne&nbsp;sawmill, which opened in 1962 and was rebuilt in 1991, produces a mixed range of sawn timber specifications, including carcassing, fencing and palletwood, with the bulk of output serving the Scottish market. (Photo Credit: Supplied)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>The sawmill opened in 1962 and primarily serves the Scottish market but also exports to&nbsp;<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.independent.co.uk\/topic\/australia\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Australia<\/a>&nbsp;and New Zealand, with the visit commemorating the completion of the sawmills&#8217;s \u00a315 million redevelopment programme.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In 2022, the company secured a 60% stake in Mayflower Enterprises, the parent company of Australian timber giants <a href=\"http:\/\/xlam.com.au\">Xlam <\/a>and <a href=\"http:\/\/hynetimber,com.au\">Hyne Timber.<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/thefifthestate.com.au\/innovation\/materials\/it-took-just-one-visit-for-james-jones-sons-to-buy-60-per-cent-of-380m-aussie-timber-company-hyne\/\">In an interview with the Fifth Estate,<\/a> Hyne Timber General Manager of Strategic Relations Katie Fowden said that Xlam&#8217;s Wodonga 60,000 cubic metre Cross-Laminated Timber plant, the first of its kind in Australia, &#8220;was a key part of the deal.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;From a Hyne perspective, it&#8217;s something that we&#8217;re excited about. Mr Bruce-Jones said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Charles is a long-time supporter of sustainable forestry <a href=\"https:\/\/woodcentral.com.au\/king-charles-iii-continuing-royal-legacy-in-forests\/\">and whilst the Prince of Wales, appointed Geraint Richards, Head Forester of the Duchy of Cornwall.<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This son of a Cornish father and Welsh mother is responsible for managing more than 2000 hectares of trees, woodlands and forests \u2013&nbsp;<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.fsc.org\/\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><em>all FSC certified<\/em><\/a>&nbsp;<strong>\u2013<\/strong>&nbsp;across the Duchy&#8217;s extensive landholding.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.forestry.org.au\/prince-of-wales-award\/\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><em>The Prince of Wales Award for Sustainable Forestry, instigated by Charles and managed in Australia by Forestry Australia<\/em><\/a>, recognises the achievements of young forest professionals in Australia and New Zealand.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Geraint Richards, who has represented the Prince of Wales at award ceremonies in Australia and New Zealand, graduated with a BSc in Forestry from Bangor University in North Wales.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;It&#8217;s about forests and foresters,&#8221; says noted forester Rob de F\u00e9gely, AM, chair of the Forest Industry Advisory Council.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;His Royal Highness has a well-known passion for forests and natural production systems,&#8221;
