{"id":11366,"date":"2023-10-04T09:21:00","date_gmt":"2023-10-03T22:21:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/woodcentral.com.au\/?p=11366"},"modified":"2024-10-21T20:27:39","modified_gmt":"2024-10-21T10:27:39","slug":"ikea-advances-with-2-2b-plan-to-modernise-retail-experience","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/woodcentral.com.au\/ikea-advances-with-2-2b-plan-to-modernise-retail-experience\/","title":{"rendered":"IKEA Advances With $2.2B Plan to Modernise Retail Experience!"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>IKEA will start rolling out the IKEA Plan &amp; order points across the United States later this year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In April,&nbsp;<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.retaildive.com\/news\/ikea-invests-two-billion-united-states-growth\/648183\/#:~:text=To%20fuel%20its%20omnichannel%20growth%20strategy%20in%20the,fulfillment%20network%2C%20according%20to%20a%20company%20press%20release.\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">the world&#8217;s largest furniture retailer announced plans to invest US $2.2 billion over the next three years<\/a>, including constructing eight new stores, nine &#8220;plan and order points&#8221;, and 900 pick-up locations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>After disappointing investments in Russia, IKEA is investing heavily in the North American market, where the company\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.lesprom.com\/en\/news\/Russian_government_approves_buyers_of_three_IKEA_factories_in_country_106446\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">sold all stores and factories<\/a>\u00a0following the Russian invasion of Ukraine.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/woodcentral.com.au\/ikea-taps-into-sweden-and-the-baltics-for-more-wood-after-shunning-russia\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">In January<\/a>, Wood Central reported that IKEA used 20 million cubic meters of wood in its products, packaging, and communication materials in the 12 months leading up to the war.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;We have managed to replace those volumes in other countries on a scorching wood market,&#8221; Ulf Johansson, IKEA&#8217;s Global Wood Supply and Forestry Manager, said at the time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-rich is-provider-twitter wp-block-embed-twitter\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\"><p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">\ud83d\udc4f A unit of <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/IKEA?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">@IKEA<\/a> store operator IngkaGroup has\u00a0agreed\u00a0to sell 14 &quot;Mega&quot; shopping centers in Russia. While the IKEA furniture chain halted all retail and production operations in the country soon after its full-scale invasion of Ukraine, Ingka kept the separate &quot;Mega&quot; shopping\u2026 <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/9ldIMMJWNG\">pic.twitter.com\/9ldIMMJWNG<\/a><\/p>&mdash; B4Ukraine (@B4Ukraine) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/B4Ukraine\/status\/1708161452719178100?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">September 30, 2023<\/a><\/blockquote><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Before the war, Russia and Belarus were the fifth and sixth largest suppliers of sawn wood for IKEA, accounting for 6% of its supplies.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In response, IKEA increased wood supply from Sweden, the Baltics, Poland, and Germany with short-term and long-term solutions.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The new investment, which will modernise the company&#8217;s eCommerce capabilities, is part of a move to grow its online business to compete with Amazon. (Photo Credit: Supplied)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.lesprom.com\/en\/news\/IKEA_to_open_an_IKEA_Plan_%26_order_point_with_Pick-up_in_Annapolis_MD_in_late_2023_109789\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">On Friday, IKEA USA announced plans to open an IKEA Plan &amp; order point with Pick-Up in Annapolis<\/a>\u00a0following investments in Arlington, Fairfax and Gaithersburg and the construction of large-format IKEA stores in Woodbridge and College Park.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This new customer meeting point will offer home furnishing inspiration and personalised interior design planning. Footage courtesy of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/@IKEA\">@IKEA.<\/a><\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>The new store strategy comes as Ikea works toward becoming climate-positive by 2030.\u00a0The retailer said it will increase solar and geothermal technology in locations when possible, transition to electric vehicle trucks and reduce waste.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Earlier this year, the company&nbsp;<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.retaildive.com\/news\/ikea-launches-as-is-service-online\/647103\/\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">launched its As-is online service<\/a>, which allows Ikea Family members to reserve gently used products online to pick up in stores.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Last May, the Ingka Group announced a separate&nbsp;<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.retaildive.com\/news\/ikea-invest-3b-in-retail-stores\/623495\/\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">investment of more than 3 billion euros<\/a>&nbsp;\u2014 or about $3.2 billion \u2014 in new and existing physical stores.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Plan would cover Ingka&#8217;s markets, including the U.S., France, Finland, Canada, Germany and Spain.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Ikea&#8217;s investment in the US may also pose a risk to other Home furnishing retailers in the market, according to GlobalData Managing Director Neil Saunders.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;As the largest furniture retailer in the world, Ikea has economies of scale and volumes that allow it to offer value that few others can match.
