{"id":11771,"date":"2023-10-17T15:41:35","date_gmt":"2023-10-17T04:41:35","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/woodcentral.com.au\/?p=11771"},"modified":"2024-10-21T20:27:34","modified_gmt":"2024-10-21T10:27:34","slug":"nz-to-cut-barriers-for-building-material-imports-post-election","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/woodcentral.com.au\/nz-to-cut-barriers-for-building-material-imports-post-election\/","title":{"rendered":"NZ to Cut Barriers for Building Material Imports Post-Election?"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>NZ will have a new Prime Minister after NZ National Christopher Luxon defeated Labour&#8217;s Chris Hopkins on Saturday.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Whilst counting continues, Wood Central can report that Christopher Luxon is in a strong position to secure government with the support of the ACT Party and, potentially, Winston Peters NZ First Party.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/woodcentral.com.au\/30-days-till-nz-votes-focus-on-ets-climate-net-zero-buildings\/\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Over the last month<\/a>, Wood Central has covered the policy positions of National and Labour, with forestry emerging as a hot button following Cyclone Gabrielle.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>With the election of PM Luxon, attention now turns to National&#8217;s &#8220;<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/assets.nationbuilder.com\/nationalparty\/pages\/18188\/attachments\/original\/1693434471\/Better_Building_and_Construction.pdf?1693434471\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><em>Better Building and Construction Policy,<\/em><\/a>&#8221; which proposed a boost in funding for the Building Research Association of New Zealand (BRANZ) to drive greater sustainability in the built environment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As revealed in National&#8217;s manifesto,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.scoop.co.nz\/stories\/PA2309\/S00017\/national-to-deliver-faster-and-fairer-disaster-recovery.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><em>&#8220;Breaking the Barriers to Building and Construction,&#8221;<\/em><\/a>&nbsp;the new government claimed that regulations governing construction materials &#8220;are too rigid&#8221; WoodCentralAu (@WoodCentralAU1) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/WoodCentralAU1\/status\/1702096985636151568?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">September 13, 2023<\/a><\/blockquote><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>It claimed that building materials and product systems that meet international standards at least equivalent to New Zealand &#8220;will be approved for use.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It also said that current rules have led to high market concentrations of certain building products, with a lack of competition driving higher prices.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Crucially, &#8220;this includes American, European, British and Australian standards,&#8221; with &#8220;MBIE notified of all newly imported building materials for approval.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Wood Central understands that the policy could lead to more standards that meet ISO requirements or equivalent, being approved as part of the government&#8217;s push to keep material costs down and stimulate growth.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>According to an anonymous source connected to the timber industry, the cost of timber framing has been up to 80% more expensive in New Zealand than in Australia due to a lack of competitiveness.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/woodcentral.com.au\/maori-to-sue-nz-gov-in-high-court-over-prejudicial-ets-changes\/\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">In the days leading up to the election<\/a>, Wood Central reported that NZ Maori leaders launched High Court action against the NZ Government over what it considered &#8220;prejudical&#8221; reforms to the Emission Trading Scheme.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Labour and National committed to reforming the ETS, with Luxon &#8220;promising to limit forestry in the ETS \u2013 and prohibit foreign investment in farm-to-forestry conversion,&#8221;
