{"id":12029,"date":"2023-10-24T18:05:23","date_gmt":"2023-10-24T07:05:23","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/woodcentral.com.au\/?p=12029"},"modified":"2024-10-21T20:27:32","modified_gmt":"2024-10-21T10:27:32","slug":"embodied-carbon-drives-timber-building-surge-in-australia","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/woodcentral.com.au\/embodied-carbon-drives-timber-building-surge-in-australia\/","title":{"rendered":"GBCA Reports Surge in Timber Buildings Applying for Green Star"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>&#8216;Embodied carbon&#8217; is on the radar of every developer and landlord as the world looks to replace carbon-heavy steel and concrete with timber.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The stakes could not be higher, with more than 50 million square metres of real estate under construction between now and 2030.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>That is according to Green Building Council of Australia CEO Davina Rooney,&nbsp;<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.afr.com\/property\/commercial\/as-timber-buildings-go-up-emissions-come-down-20231009-p5eaxt\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">who spoke to the Australian Financial Review about the push to grow timber buildings.<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/woodcentral.com.au\/australia-champions-decarbonisation-with-worlds-tallest-mass-timber-towers\/\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Australia has emerged as a global leader in the push to decarbonise<\/a>, with Ms Rooney pointing to a surge in timber-rich buildings registered for 4-star, 5-star and 6-star projects.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Ms Rooney, who participated in a panel organised by the Wood Central Publisher last year, is a long-time supporter of timber-led construction.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<div class=\"youtube-embed\" data-video_id=\"iYIYRhvGjsg\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Weathertex Talks... with Davina Rooney, CEO of GBCA on Circular Economy\" width=\"696\" height=\"392\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/iYIYRhvGjsg?feature=oembed&#038;enablejsapi=1\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/div>\n<\/div><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\"><em>Davina Rooney, CEO of the Green Building Council of Australia, spoke last year about the role of sustainable timber in the circular economy. Footage courtesy of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=iYIYRhvGjsg\">@weathertex.<\/a><\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Between 2011 and 2018, just five timber buildings were registered for Green Star,&nbsp;<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/woodcentral.com.au\/key-stakeholders-inspect-mass-timber-projects-in-olympic-city\/\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">including 25 King Street<\/a>, which doubled with six more in 2019 and 2020 and again with 16 in 2021, 2022 and 2023.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;Of all the timber buildings buildings registered with the Green Building Council over history, we&#8217;ve done more than 50% in the last three years alone,&#8221; Ms Rooney said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The pivot towards timber is part of a shifting focus from operational carbon to reducing emissions connected to the construction process.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;Developers know the pathway to net-zero in operations,&#8221; Footage courtesy of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=H6uF5DSrRp0\">@VictoriaWood<\/a>.<\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>But it is a start, and according to the Australian Government&#8217;s Clean Energy Finance Cooperation, &#8216;mid-rise construction&#8221; is the sweet spot for timber buildings.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Clean Energy Finance Corporation (CEFC) aims to encourage the take-up of timber construction materials to absorb carbon and reduce the emissions of new buildings.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In late 2022,<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/woodcentral.com.au\/hines-t3-collingwood-project-slashes-carbon-by-34-percent\/\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">&nbsp;it announced a $70 million investment in the T3 Collingwood project<\/a>, which earlier this month achieved practical completion.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h6 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Will the Build-to-Rent market drive new timber buildings?<\/strong><\/h6>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/woodcentral.com.au\/sumitomo-uses-mass-timber-to-drive-global-build-to-rent-projects\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Earlier this month<\/a>, Wood Central reported that Japanese giant Sumitomo is looking to mass timber construction systems to drive build-to-rent housing stock across Asia, Europe and Australia.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"592\" src=\"https:\/\/woodcentral.com.au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/10\/Sumitomo-using-mass-timber-Wood-Central-1-1024x592.png\" alt=\"The Sumitomo subsidiary Crescent Communities is using mass timber to construct 'build to rent' accommodation across the US sunbelt including Novel Atherton in Charlotte, USA. (Photo Credit: Crescent Communities Facebook)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Using its Atlassian know-how, Mr Mason said Built is now working with the Liverpool City Council in Sydney&#8217;s West to use mass timber to push into the build-to-rent market.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It comes as Malaysian developer&nbsp;<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/woodcentral.com.au\/malaysia-looks-to-mass-timber-to-drive-future-of-housing\/\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><em>UEM Sunrise is partnering with Australian-based Greystar Real Estate Partners to develop 3000 units in inner city Melbourne.&nbsp;<\/em><\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;We see the potential for a substantial demand for BTR projects as people seek out more alternative housing options in addition to BTS projects,&#8221; according to UEM Sunrise CEO Sufian Abdullah.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h6 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Upskilling Engineers and Architects to use Mass Timber Systems<\/strong><\/h6>\n\n\n\n<p>The greatest challenge to mass timber adoption is to train engineers and architects to use construction systems effectively.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>According to Adam Jones,<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/woodcentral.com.au\/clt-toolbox-teams-up-with-australias-mass-timber-leaders\/\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">&nbsp;co-founder of CLT Toolbox, an education software platform launched yesterday<\/a>, Australia has a significant shortfall in structural engineers who can sign off on the material.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;In Australia, we have about 10,000 structural engineers and only 30 of them are timber specialists,&#8221;&nbsp;<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/woodcentral.com.au\/bluescope-backs-clt-toolbox-start-up-to-drive-net-zero-buildings\/\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Mr Jones said earlier this month.<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Mr Jones, who, with Ringo Thomas, is behind the Melbourne start-up CLT Toolbox, has signed partnership agreements with all major Australian mass timber suppliers, Monash University, and the ARC Advance Timber Hub \u2013 administered by the University of Queensland.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>They also have the backing of Bluescope, which headlined a consortium of investors earlier this month supporting the software that removes &#8216;bottlenecks&#8217; and helps engineers design buildings using mass timber construction systems.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Visit&nbsp;<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/clttoolbox.com.au\/\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><em>CLT Toolbox now to register for a free trial using the software.<\/em><\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>&#8216;Embodied carbon&#8217; is on the radar of every developer and landlord as the world looks to replace carbon-heavy steel and concrete with timber.
