(Photo Credit: The Fifth Estate)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Across six key themes, the report provides 19 policy recommendations for governments to drive down carbon emissions across all buildings \u2013 commercial and residential.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The push to decarbonise has the support of Federal Minister for Climate Change and Energy Chris Bowen, Lord Mayor of Brisbane Adrian Schrinner and Lord Mayor of Melbourne Sally Capp.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In the report, Lord Mayor Schrinner said net zero &#8220;is vitally important as we head towards the Brisbane 2032 Olympic and Paralympic Games.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As Australia&#8217;s largest carbon-neutral government organisation, &#8220;it is working hard to deliver practical solutions to improve sustainability.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>According to Davina Rooney, CEO of the Green Building Council of Australia, the report will help governments define clear, long-term strategies to deliver zero carbon-ready and resilient buildings.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Ms Rooney strongly supports the push to use timber in buildings and&nbsp;<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/woodcentral.com.au\/embodied-carbon-drives-timber-building-surge-in-australia\/\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">yesterday revealed that timber-rich 5-Star and 6-Star Green Star projects have surged in recent years.<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;Our local governments have been at the global forefront of climate action innovation,&#8221; Ms Rooney said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The plan calls on the government to mandate that all buildings be net-zero-carbon ready by 2050 and that the government takes a leadership role in ensuring that all government-owned and leased buildings are net-zero by 2030.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For example, in 2019, the total office space occupied by the Australian Government was more than 14.5 million square metres.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It also pushes to reduce up-front carbon emissions, with buildings &#8220;built using materials with significantly lower embodied carbon.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"682\" src=\"https:\/\/woodcentral.com.au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/09\/WhatsApp-Image-2022-04-12-at-6.08.44-PM-1024x682.jpeg\" alt=\"The Grange Development's, C6 Tower is poised to be the world's largest timber hybrid building with more than 40% of construction materials comprises lightweight mass timber products. The development was approved earlier this month based on its low-carbon building materials (Photo Credit: Supplied by Grange Developments) <\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Yesterday, Ms Rooney said this would lead to a pivot by landlords and developers focusing on the construction process rather than the operational performance of buildings.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>According to Simon Dorries, CEO of Responsible Wood and Chair of the TM11 &#8211; which manages the Australian Standard for Engineered Wood Products, the push to target upfront carbon emissions provides a significant opportunity for the Australian timber industry.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;That&#8217;s a lot of demand for structural timber (in greenfield construction) and also appearance grade timbers (in retrofitted brownfield construction),&#8221; Mr Dorries said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Responsible Wood manages the Australian Standard for Sustainable Forest Management, with more than 90% of Australian timber products carrying the certification.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It&#8217;s recognised as part of the GBCA Responsible Products Framework, with Green Star projects using certification to meet Green Star points.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Australian Sustainable Hardwoods, one of the country&#8217;s largest manufacturers, has used Responsible Wood certification to deliver 5-star and 6-star timber-rich projects.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Australian Sustainable Hardwood&#8217;s Business Development Director, Daniel Wright, told the Wood Central Publisher, &#8220;Timber is ideally suited to drive reductions in embodied carbon across new structural projects but also in refurbishments and fit-outs.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Yesterday, MASSLAM, Australian Sustainable Hardwoods&#8217;s glue-laminated timber solution, became Australia&#8217;s first mass timber glulam system to hold Engineered Wood Products Association of Australasia certification.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"768\" height=\"361\" src=\"https:\/\/woodcentral.com.au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/10\/image_6483441-23.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-12104\" srcset=\"https:\/\/woodcentral.com.au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/10\/image_6483441-23.jpg 768w, https:\/\/woodcentral.com.au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/10\/image_6483441-23-300x141.jpg 300w, https:\/\/woodcentral.com.au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/10\/image_6483441-23-696x327.jpg 696w, https:\/\/woodcentral.com.au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/10\/image_6483441-23-600x282.jpg 600w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 768px) 100vw, 768px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">The first of four MASSLAM plants &#8211; featuring the world&#8217;s largest Hundegger K2i. the first to be funded under the Australian Clean Energy Finance Corporation&#8217;s Timber Encouragement Policy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But it is not just greenfield construction where timber can utilised to drive lower embodied carbon, according to Andrew Dunn, CEO of the Timber Development Association.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;You only need to look at the Walsh Bay Arts Precinct, where the original timbers were restored and reused in the award-winning project.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.smh.com.au\/national\/nsw\/timber-cathedrals-new-sydney-arts-precinct-wins-major-award-20220510-p5ak5m.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><em>The Sydney Morning Herald describes it as &#8220;timber cathedrals,&#8221;<\/em><\/a>&nbsp;it was designed by award-winning architect Peter Tonkin, a director of&nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.tzg.com.au\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><em>Tonkin Zulaikha Greer Architects<\/em><\/a>&nbsp;and is home to nine arts companies, including the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.aco.com.au\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><em>Australian Chamber Orchestra.<\/em><\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-gallery has-nested-images columns-default is-cropped wp-block-gallery-1 (Photo Credit: John Gollings)<br><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Mr Dunn, the organiser of the Australian Timber Design Awards, said the project secured the Australian Timber Design Awards for Interior Commercial and the People&#8217;s Choice Award \u2013 awarded to the project that received the most votes from the public.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The timber, mostly preserved from its original installation 100 years ago, contrasted beautifully with the modern theatre and dance stage.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;And you only have to look at the venue where we are hosting this year&#8217;s awards, at Cargo Hall,&#8221; Mr Dunn said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Previously a working harbour, the venue was brought back to life in 2013 after being converted into one of Melbourne&#8217;s best-known event spaces.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;Appropriately, recycled wood has been used greatly in the total rebuild.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>For more information about the Timber Design Awards, including ticket availability, visit the dedicated Timber Design Awards website.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Melbourne must decarbonise at least 80 commercial buildings every year for the city to meet its net-zero targets.
