&#8220;high costs of rubber-based woods from Burma and Africa&#8221;, forcing them to look to South America.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In recent months,<a href=\"https:\/\/www.agriinvestor.com\/demand-for-timber-set-to-soar-with-latin-america-and-asia-emerging-as-regions-of-opportunity\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">&nbsp;Latin America has emerged as a booming market for forest exports<\/a>, with&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/woodcentral.com.au\/brazil-looks-at-large-scale-timber-solutions-for-housing-crisis\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Brazil now supplying cross-laminated timber panels, glulam, parquet and laminated flooring, sandwich panels, railway sleepers and rounded saw wood to global markets.<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Now,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.thehindubusinessline.com\/economy\/logistics\/after-a-decade-cochin-port-receives-timber-log-shipments-from-brazil\/article67528335.ece\/amp\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">more than 15,000 tonnes of Eucalyptus used to manufacture plywood have arrived at the Cochin Port in Kerala<\/a>, southwestern India, providing a much-needed lifeline for more than 400 plywood manufacturing plants operating in the region.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Wood Central understands that it is the first shipment from Brazil in over a decade, with Eucalyptus, silver oak, and diladubia by href=\"https:\/\/www.plyreporter.com\/article\/10089\/Kerala-Emerging-as-Sourcing-Hub-for-Many-Brands\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Kerala has become a regional hub for plywood manufacturing<\/a>, with the Indian government looking to scale up production to meet the booming building and construction industry.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/woodcentral.com.au\/indias-soaring-timber-demand-is-ready-for-liftoff\/\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">India has emerged as a global power in forest markets,&nbsp;<\/a>and&nbsp;<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/groundreport.in\/why-india-needs-to-import-timber-from-other-countries\/#:~:text=As%20per%20the%20Centre%20for%20Science%20and%20Environment,the%20remaining%2033%20million%20cubic%20meters%20are%20imported.\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><em>according to the Indian Centre for Science and Environment<\/em><\/a>, the country&#8217;s annual demand for wood is 63 million cubic metres \u2013 30 million cubic metres for domestic production and 33 million cubic metres from imported sources.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Once home to the world&#8217;s first scientific silvicultural plantation in 1840, the &#8220;Connolly Plantation&#8221; was up until the 1980s responsible for 10% of India&#8217;s total forest plantation. However, under-investment over the past 40 years has seen its tree stocks sink, with the state becoming a net importer of raw logs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>According to the Kerala Plywood Manufacturing Association, the cost of rubber wood trees has reached 8500-9000 rupees per tonne, &#8220;making it unviable for companies to offer a minimum standard in plywood manufacturing.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Manufacturers are now looking to import logs from not only Brazil but also Sri Lanka, &#8220;where the prices are comparatively lower and ensure a viable business proposition for the plywood manufacturing industry.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/woodcentral.com.au\/why-brazil-is-key-player-in-fixing-australias-hardwood-supply\/\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">As reported by Wood Central earlier this month<\/a>, the Brazilian&nbsp;<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/woodcentral.com.au\/brazils-amazon-summit-push-for-un-like-oversight-of-forests\/\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><em>government is now subsidising shipping costs in a rush to seize the commercial opportunities&nbsp;<\/em>for global timber shortages.<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Last year, the confirmed subsidies for shipping reached $US 118.55, equivalent to 5.86% of the gross domestic product, &#8220;driven by elevated borrowing costs and the implementation of new tax benefits, particularly on fuels.&#8221;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>India is turning to Brazil as it grapples with a shortage of timber, with plywood manufacturers struggling with &#8220;high costs of rubber-based woods from Burma and Africa&#8221;, forcing them to look to South America.
