and wants to use funds from global governments and the private sector to give to tropical countries meeting minimum thresholds for limiting deforestation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The fund,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/woodcentral.com.au\/inside-brazils-bold-cop28-plan-for-a-tropical-forest-megafund\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">which Wood Central reported last week<\/a>, is now known as the &#8220;Tropical Forests Forever&#8221; and would see a reduction in funding should deforestation increase.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Proposed as part of a panel at the COP28 climate summit in Dubai last night, Brazilian Environment Minister Marina Silva and Finance Minister Fernando Haddad said the fund is capitalising on the interest in nature-based solutions for addressing climate change.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Wood Central understands that Brazil is the primary driver of the fund but is supported by twelve countries representing the Amazon, Congo Basin and Southeast Asia.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The countries, which include more than 80% of the world&#8217;s tropical forests, are behind a push by Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva for the rich &#8220;to pay money not only to take care of canopy but to take care of the people who live under it.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<div class=\"youtube-embed\" data-video_id=\"Gn3-JXrwU2I\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Brazil urges rich countries to pay and protect the Amazon amid climate crisis\" width=\"696\" height=\"392\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/Gn3-JXrwU2I?feature=oembed&#038;enablejsapi=1\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/div>\n<\/div><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\"><em>The Brazilian president, Luiz In\u00e1cio Lula da Silva, has told developed countries to put their money where their mouth is when it comes to protecting the world\u2019s remaining tropical forests, as major rainforest nations demanded hundreds of billions of dollars of climate financing and a more significant role in how those resources are spent\u2014footage courtesy of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/@guardiannews\">@guardiannews.<\/a><\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>In August, the countries signed a&nbsp;<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.br\/mre\/en\/contact-us\/press-area\/press-releases\/united-for-our-forests-joint-communique-of-developing-forest-countries-in-belem\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><em>pact known as &#8220;United for Our Forests,&#8221;<\/em><\/a>&nbsp;pushing for wealthier countries to do more to assist poorer countries in transitioning to a green economy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;It&#8217;s a conceptual proposal to create a fund to help conserve tropical forests around the world\u2026in 80 countries,&#8221; according to Brazil&#8217;s top climate diplomat, Andre Correa do Lago, at COP28.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And unlike existing schemes, the fund would not value forest conservation in terms of carbon &#8220;since protecting forests would prevent further greenhouse gas emissions rather than absorbing additional carbon dioxide already in the atmosphere.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Instead, the value is linked to measuring forest area in hectares or units of 0.01 square kilometres.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Establishing a new fund would be in conjunction with the US $100B &#8220;Loss and Damage Fund&#8221; including the UAE, Germany, the UK, the USA and Japan.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The loss and damage fund refers to the impact of climate-induced events on economies, infrastructures, and societies.
