{"id":13521,"date":"2023-12-11T10:46:09","date_gmt":"2023-12-10T23:46:09","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/woodcentral.com.au\/?p=13521"},"modified":"2024-10-21T20:27:18","modified_gmt":"2024-10-21T10:27:18","slug":"as-demand-soars-itto-calls-for-green-finance-in-tropical-timber","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/woodcentral.com.au\/as-demand-soars-itto-calls-for-green-finance-in-tropical-timber\/","title":{"rendered":"As Demand Soars, ITTO Calls for Green Finance in Tropical Timber"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Global leaders must ramp up investment in sustainable tropical forest management or risk large-scale deforestation caused by changes in land use.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>That is according to the Executive Director of the International Tropical Timber Organisation (ITTO), Sheam Satkuru, who addressed the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) at COP28 in Dubai.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The ITTO is an intergovernmental organisation established in 1994 to promote the conservation of tropical forest resources and their sustainable management, use and trade.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In recent years,&nbsp;<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.worldwildlife.org\/threats\/deforestation-and-forest-degradation\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><em>&nbsp;the World Wildlife Foundation (WWF)<\/em><\/a>&nbsp;has reported that two-thirds of global forest cover loss occurs in the tropical and subtropic regions and includes hot spots\u2014or &#8220;<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/wwf.panda.org\/discover\/our_focus\/forests_practice\/deforestation_fronts_\/\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><em>deforestation fronts<\/em><\/a>&nbsp;&#8220;\u2014 in Latin America, sub-Saharan Africa, Southeast Asia, and Oceania.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Deforestation accounts for up to 10% of worldwide greenhouse gas emissions,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.un.org\/en\/desa\/global-forest-goals-report-2021\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><em>according to the UN Global Forest Goals report<\/em><\/a>, with a<a href=\"https:\/\/www.sei.org\/about-sei\/press-room\/tropical-deforestation-linked-to-exports-of-key-commodities\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><em>\u00a0recent report identifying that more than 50% of deforestation occurs in 5% of producing areas\u00a0<\/em><\/a>\u2013 including in the Amazon, Cerrado and Gran Chaco biomes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<div class=\"youtube-embed\" data-video_id=\"HZmUdRJcZmc\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"EU Deforestation Regulation - An overview\" width=\"696\" height=\"392\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/HZmUdRJcZmc?feature=oembed&#038;enablejsapi=1\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/div>\n<\/div><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\"><em>In May 2023, the EU introduced its breakthrough EU Deforestation Regulations, which, for the first time, will make it illegal to import and sell forest products from deforested sources. (Photo Credit: Stock Photo from the Brazilian Government)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/woodcentral.com.au\/brazil-pushes-250b-tropical-forest-fund-to-halt-deforestation\/\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">The calls to boost green investment in tropical forests come as Brazil is pushing to create a $250 billion &#8220;megafund&#8221;<\/a>&nbsp;and wants to use funds from global governments and the private sector to give to tropical countries meeting minimum thresholds for limiting deforestation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The fund,&nbsp;<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/woodcentral.com.au\/inside-brazils-bold-cop28-plan-for-a-tropical-forest-megafund\/\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><em>which Wood Central reported last week<\/em><\/a>, is now known as the &#8220;Tropical Forests Forever&#8221; and would see a reduction in funding should deforestation increase.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;It&#8217;s a conceptual proposal to create a fund to help conserve tropical forests around the world\u2026in 80 countries,&#8221; according to Brazil&#8217;s top climate diplomat, Andre Correa do Lago, at COP28.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It coincides with new research, which suggests more than 6.6 million hectares of forest will be lost to deforestation in 2022, an increase of 4% compared to 2021.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>According to its most recent assessment,&nbsp;<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/forestdeclaration.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/10\/2023ForestDeclarationAssessment.pdf\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><em>&#8220;Off Track and Falling Behind&#8221;<\/em><\/a>, it claims the rate of deforestation was &#8220;21% higher than needed to eliminate deforestation by 2030.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For the first time, the report offers a comprehensive blueprint for saving forests, &#8220;defining for the first time the pathways to stop destroying forests, to meet global commitments and bring our forests back to life,&#8221; according to co-author Mary Gagen from the WWF-UK.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/woodcentral.com.au\/global-deforestation-surges-despite-cop26-commitments\/\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><em>Earlier this year, new research from the University of Maryland&nbsp;<\/em><\/a>reported that an area of tropical forest the size of Switzerland was lost last year as tree losses surged.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Global leaders must ramp up investment in sustainable tropical forest management or risk large-scale deforestation caused by changes in land use.
