(Photo Credit: Strong by Form Linkedin account)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Car manufacturers are under greater scrutiny to decarbonise their supply chain &#8211; specifically in manufacturing &#8211;&nbsp;<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.industryweek.com\/supply-chain\/procurement\/article\/21278692\/what-are-automakers-doing-to-cut-scope-1-3-emissions\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">with COP28 drawing attention to the automotive industry&#8217;s<\/a>&nbsp;scope three emissions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;Many challenges related to value-chain decarbonisation are addressed at the C-suite level,&#8221;&nbsp;<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.industryweek.com\/supply-chain\/procurement\/article\/21278692\/what-are-automakers-doing-to-cut-scope-1-3-emissions\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">according to an article by Industry Week last week<\/a>.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;However, material engineers, procurement department leaders, quality managers and supplier management leaders must also deal with these strategies.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/woodcentral.com.au\/un-reveals-blueprint-to-decarbonise-construction-industry\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">In September<\/a>, Wood Central reported on a UN report highlighting the importance of substituting &#8220;conventional materials like steel, concrete, and aluminium&#8221; for biobased materials &#8220;including timber, bamboo and biomass&#8221; as the world looks to decarbonise to meet climate targets.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<div class=\"youtube-embed\" data-video_id=\"S1E8SQde5rk\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"The Contradictions of Battery Operated Vehicles  | Graham Conway | TEDxSanAntonio\" width=\"696\" height=\"392\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/S1E8SQde5rk?feature=oembed&#038;enablejsapi=1\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/div>\n<\/div><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\"><em>In recent years, electric-powered vehicles have come under scrutiny, with car manufacturers now looking to reduce scope three emissions in car manufacturing to meet climate commitments &#8211; footage courtesy of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/@TEDx\">@TedX.<\/a><\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>According to a&nbsp;<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.mckinsey.com\/~\/media\/mckinsey\/industries\/automotive%20and%20assembly\/our%20insights\/the%20race%20to%20decarbonize%20electric%20vehicle%20batteries\/the-race-to-decarbonize-electric-vehicle-batteries-vf.pdf\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">McKinsey &amp; Company study<\/a>, typical upstream EV emissions include battery (40%\u201360%), steel (15%\u201320%), aluminium (10%\u201320%) and plastics (around 10%). Upstream internal combustion engine (ICE) vehicle emissions include steel (25%\u201335%), aluminium (20%\u201330%) and plastics (15%\u201320%).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>To reduce emissions and meet voluntary (i.e. climate pledges) and compulsory commitments (i.e. the EU Geen Deal), manufacturers are investing in supplier development and management to reduce carbon reduction &#8211; which has seen long-term interest in timber and pulp.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.com\/news\/business-41145744\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">In 2017<\/a>, the BBC reported that Japanese researchers were working to create a strong material from wood pulp that could replace steel parts in vehicles by 2027!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Researchers at Kyoto University in Japan claimed that wood-pulp-based materials could be as strong as steel, 80% lighter and can be used close to the engine ignition.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The researchers are working with the Japanese government, carmakers, and other manufacturers to develop the material and even create a prototype for the 2020 (2021) Tokyo Olympic Games!&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.com\/news\/business-41145744\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">According to the BBC<\/a>, the team has been chemically treating wood pulp, which consists of millions of cellulose nanofibres (CNFs), and dispersing these CNFs into plastic, which could be a viable alternative to carbon fibre.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Blending CNFs with plastics creates a robust hybrid material that could replace steel in auto parts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Professor Hiroyuki Yano, who led the work at Kyoto University, states that the material has the potential to be &#8220;fit for purpose&#8221; for door panels, fenders and car bonnets.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The drive to use &#8220;greener&#8221; materials is gathering speed among automakers more broadly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Frost &amp; Sullivan&#8217;s Mr Vaidya said manufacturers are trying to shrink the total carbon footprint of a vehicle and &#8220;not just the emissions that come out of the tailpipe&#8221;.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This is why BMW,&nbsp;<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.com\/news\/business-41145744\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">as part of its latest Sustainability Commitment to Vehicles, Materials and Production<\/a>, is now &#8220;intensifying the collaboration with innovative start-ups (like Strong by Form) in the field of future-oriented materials.&#8221;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The automotive industry is investing in new technologies, which could see wood panels replace steel in car chassis, seats, and body parts.
