as the continent turns to mass timber construction to meet a surge in demand for infrastructure.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The push to embrace mass timber is part of a multi-billion-dollar investment into African reforestation &#8211;&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/woodcentral.com.au\/in-scramble-for-africa-the-uae-leads-race-to-colonise-carbon\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">driven by China, Europe, and most recently, the Middle East.<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/woodcentral.com.au\/could-bamboo-timber-retrofits-spur-growth-in-the-global-south\/\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Last month<\/a>, Wood Central reported that African and Middle Eastern developers were looking to cross-laminated timbers and bamboo to drive the development of future cities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>At the same time, plans are underway for a 48-metre timber observation tower to rise over Kenya&#8217;s Maasai Mara wildlife reserve,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/woodcentral.com.au\/timber-tower-rises-over-maasai-mara-one-of-10-wonders-of-world\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">drawing inspiration from traditional Kenyan construction techniques and materials.<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Now, plans are afoot for a new development known as Burj Zanzibar in Fumba Town, Zanzibar, which, if constructed (in 2026), will become the world&#8217;s tallest hybrid timber structure.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The 28-storey residential development, developed by German engineering firm CPS, is billed as Africa&#8217;s first &#8220;wooden high-rise&#8221; and will &#8220;supply safe and equitable homes for thousands of families in Tanzania and East Africa.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It is part of a global push to substitute high-carbon building materials&nbsp;<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/woodcentral.com.au\/un-reveals-blueprint-to-decarbonise-construction-industry\/\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">to make the construction industry greener and cleaner<\/a>, with timber replacing steel and concrete in the future of zero-carbon buildings.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;About 200 years ago, everyone was building with timber; then it shifted to cement, steel, and stones,&#8221; according to Karl Kirchmayer, co-founder and managing partner at ASC Impact. &#8220;Now people are going back, especially with modern housing.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<div class=\"youtube-embed\" data-video_id=\"cSYbwwofCKQ\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Is mass timber the building material of the future?\" width=\"696\" height=\"392\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/cSYbwwofCKQ?feature=oembed&#038;enablejsapi=1\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; are not mainstream, he said the African trajectory is &#8220;leading to a more timber-centric future.&#8221; This &#8220;buildout&#8221; has led CLT Toolbox, the innovative software company focused on making timber design simpler than concrete and steel, to open an office in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;By establishing our presence in Ethiopia, CLT Toolbox aims to become a catalyst for positive change,&#8221;&nbsp;<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/woodcentral.com.au\/clt-toolbox-fuels-global-expansion-with-new-office-in-ethiopia\/\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">according to Adam Jones, CLT Toolbox&#8217;s co-founder, who opened the office in July last year.<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;We strive to make environmental contributions through making mass timber design accessible to all engineers while simultaneously creating economic opportunities within the Addis Ababa community.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>While the market for cross-laminated timber in Africa and the Middle East is still in its infancy<a href=\"https:\/\/www.scribd.com\/document\/510618322\/Mass-timber-building-material-in-the-Ethiopian-construction-industry\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><em>, research published in April 2021 points to the growing potential for mass timber in the Ethiopian construction sector<\/em><\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"884\" height=\"425\" src=\"https:\/\/woodcentral.com.au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/01\/Cross-Laminated-Timber-Market-Wood-Central-1.png.webp\" alt=\"Cross Laminated Timber Market Wood Central 1.png\" class=\"wp-image-13969\" srcset=\"https:\/\/woodcentral.com.au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/01\/Cross-Laminated-Timber-Market-Wood-Central-1.png.webp 884w, https:\/\/woodcentral.com.au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/01\/Cross-Laminated-Timber-Market-Wood-Central-1.png-300x144.webp 300w, https:\/\/woodcentral.com.au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/01\/Cross-Laminated-Timber-Market-Wood-Central-1.png-768x369.webp 768w, https:\/\/woodcentral.com.au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/01\/Cross-Laminated-Timber-Market-Wood-Central-1.png-696x335.webp 696w, https:\/\/woodcentral.com.au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/01\/Cross-Laminated-Timber-Market-Wood-Central-1.png-874x420.webp 874w, https:\/\/woodcentral.com.au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/01\/Cross-Laminated-Timber-Market-Wood-Central-1.png-600x288.webp 600w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 884px) 100vw, 884px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>According to Energy Monitor, replacing energy-intensive building materials like steel, concrete, aluminium and glass with mass timber could prevent up to 100 billion metric tonnes of carbon dioxide from entering the atmosphere by the end of the century.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For Mr Kirchmayer, hybrid housing units combining concrete and timber provide the most significant scope for growth &#8220;due to faster construction times.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>With vast lands conducive to tree growth and just 21% of the African continent covered by forest area, he said the region is &#8220;now ripe for reforestation initiatives that could support mass timber production and other carbon-based projects.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;The best way to sequester carbon is by planting new forests, particularly across vast surfaces.&#8221; He said utilising these trees for timber means the carbon is sequestered in the buildings, replacing steel and cement.&nbsp;<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/mg.co.za\/thought-leader\/2023-09-07-carbon-credits-a-controversial-topic-at-africa-climate-summit\/\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">This carbon remains bound<\/a>&nbsp;as long as the structure stands.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Global investment in Africa is booming &#8211;
