(Image Credit: Patkau Architects)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;(U &amp; T&#8217;s) Academic Tower proves that we can reduce emissions, responsibly construct new buildings and contribute to the vibrant architectural fabric of a dense city like Toronto,&#8221; Ms Hanington said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Canada is a leader in wood construction technologies and home to one of the largest forest industries in the world. Fittingly, the tower&#8217;s timber is homegrown, originating in Western Canada.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/woodcentral.com.au\/could-bcs-new-building-code-spark-timber-boom-in-vancouver\/\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Last month<\/a>, Wood Central reported that the Canadian Government wants to change its National Building Code to allow all-timber buildings up to 18 storeys, or 50% above current restrictions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It is part of a sweep of programs aimed at reducing embodied carbon and decarbonising construction \u2013 and comes as&nbsp;<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/woodcentral.com.au\/how-cop28s-timber-coalition-tackles-carbon-in-buildings\/\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><em>Canada became a signatory of the coalition of countries that will incentivise wooden construction to meet net-zero targets<\/em><\/a>&nbsp;at COP28 in Dubai in November.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Wood Central understands that the first deliveries of mass-timber components arrived on site yesterday, with the building to be constructed in time for the first semester of 2026<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The University of Toronto&#8217;s new 14-storey mass timber building is now &#8220;shovel ready&#8221;, which, once completed, will be one of the tallest timber buildings in North America.
