The longer we are out of that market, the harder it will be to get back in,&#8221; Mr Dobson said last year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In recent years, the Indian economy has emerged as one of the most important, if not the most important, global markets for structural timbers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/woodcentral.com.au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/02\/image-25-1024x768.png\" alt=\"image 25\" class=\"wp-image-14776\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">image 25<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/woodcentral.com.au\/indias-tiger-economy-to-fuel-global-timber-supply-for-years\/\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Yesterday<\/a>, Wood Central reported that India is now the United States&#8217; fastest-growing market for softwood lumber, with more than 116,000 cubic metres of timber shipped from the West Coast alone.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Along with New Zealand and the United States, Indian traders are also turning to Australia, Canada,<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/woodcentral.com.au\/india-targets-brazil-for-log-supply-as-plywood-demand-surges\/\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><em>&nbsp;Brazil<\/em><\/a>&nbsp;and Uruguay to make up a shortfall of 33 million cubic metres of structural timber.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And that demand is expected to stay strong for years, with India&#8217;s increasingly confident developers speculating that the country is in the initial stages of a housing growth cycle.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;The housing market will perform well for another three to four years (at least),&#8221; according to Sanjeev Jain, the managing director at Parsvnath Developers, adding that property sales in India&#8217;s seven largest cities, including Mumbai, New Delhi and Bangalore, rocked 36% in the July-September quarter to 112,000 units.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"695\" src=\"https:\/\/woodcentral.com.au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/02\/image-24.png\" alt=\"image 24\" class=\"wp-image-14775\" srcset=\"https:\/\/woodcentral.com.au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/02\/image-24.png 1024w, https:\/\/woodcentral.com.au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/02\/image-24-300x204.png 300w, https:\/\/woodcentral.com.au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/02\/image-24-768x521.png 768w, https:\/\/woodcentral.com.au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/02\/image-24-696x472.png 696w, https:\/\/woodcentral.com.au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/02\/image-24-619x420.png 619w, https:\/\/woodcentral.com.au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/02\/image-24-600x407.png 600w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Port Nelson is one of NZ\u2019s largest regional terminals, exporting forestry products including logs, sawn and processed timber to China, South Korea and, until the fumigation dispute, India (Photo Credit: Supplied from LINX Cargo Care Group Twitter)<br><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/woodcentral.com.au\/boosting-log-exports-key-to-india-nz-bilateral-trade-talks\/\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">From February 2022 until now<\/a>, the NZ Ministry of Primary Industries has mandated the recapture or destruction of methyl bromide emissions at the end of fumigation &#8211; creating conflict with Indian authorities who insisted that timbers be treated with&nbsp;<em>methyl bromide.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And whilst the NZ Environmental Protection Authority has pushed to replace methyl bromide with EDN fumigation, a successful trial late last year saw logs fumigated with methyl bromide at Indian ports instead of being traded before setting sail from NZ.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Ironing out NZ&#8217;s long-running methyl bromide\u00a0dispute with India is the country&#8217;s top trade objective, according to NZ&#8217;s Trade Minister, Todd McClay, who is pushing to restore the $200m plus hole in log exports.
