(Photo Credit: The Canadian Press \/ Alamy Stock Photo)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Fast + Epp is a leader in timber-based engineering and, through its Mass Timber Concept Lab, claims to&nbsp;<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.fastepp.com\/firm\/expertise\/#:~:text=Fast%20%2B%20Epp%20has%20led%20the%20charge%20to,structurally%20efficient%2C%20sustainably%20sourced%2C%20and%20architecturally%20striking%20structures.\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">&#8220;create structurally efficient, sustainably sourced, and architecturally striking structures.&#8221;<\/a>&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Its past projects include UBC Tallwood House at Brock Commons (once the tallest mass timber building in the world, Limberlost Place and BCIT Tall Timber Student Housing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Working with the Canadian Government and the Prince George&#8217;s University of Northern British Columbia, it has already conducted 180 tests across 30 different configurations. &#8220;Including different wood species, manufacturers, panel grades, screw reinforcing patterns, panel thicknesses and geometries, column types and locations and baseplate geometries.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The goal, according to Fast + Epp, is not only for point-supported CLT to be embraced in Canadian building codes but &#8220;to help engineers better understand how to design, analyse and detail panels for their projects, maximising the use of timber as a sustainable resource.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<div class=\"youtube-embed\" data-video_id=\"2rN-HqSoVBY\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"The Future of Skyscrapers\u2026 WOOD?\" width=\"696\" height=\"392\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/2rN-HqSoVBY?feature=oembed&#038;enablejsapi=1\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/div>\n<\/div><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\"><em><span style=\"background-color: rgba(0, 0, 0, 0.2);\">The world&#8217;s first post-and-plate timber high-rise building opened last year, made from a new type of mass timber called &#8220;mass plywood panels&#8221;, which, <\/span>due to its unique structural elements, can outperform CLT &#8211; footage courtesy of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/@buildshow\">@buildshow.<\/a><\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/woodcentral.com.au\/first-post-and-plate-high-rise-revolutionises-mass-timber-construction\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Last year<\/a>, Wood Central revealed that post-to-plate construction could save up to 15% in costs and shave 25% off construction times relative to traditional steel and concrete systems.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.owow.com\/1510-webster\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><em>Used in oWOW&#8217;s 1510 Webster Street<\/em><\/a>&nbsp;in downtown Oakland, California, the 18 floors of 125mm mass ply panels, each comprising 45 layers of veneered timber, were installed over a single-storey concrete podium, in what is the &#8220;tallest beamless mass plywood panel structure in the world.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>According to oWOW President Andrew Ball,&nbsp;<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/woodcentral.com.au\/owow-president-among-highlights-as-timber-offsite-wraps-up\/\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">who spoke at last year&#8217;s Timber Offsite Construction conference in Melbourne, Australia<\/a>, post-and-plate systems could spur a global boom in timber projects, with oWOW looking to use mass plywood panels in more than 600 projects worldwide.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Andrew Dunn, the CEO of Australia&#8217;s Timber Development Association, said post-and-plate systems &#8220;are the next big thing in mass timber,&#8221; claiming that the timber panels &#8220;resembling concrete flat plates,&#8221; before adding that &#8220;The University of Oregon is currently testing an example of this system.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>To learn more about post-and-plate construction systems,&nbsp;<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/woodcentral.com.au\/first-post-and-plate-high-rise-revolutionises-mass-timber-construction\/\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">read Wood Central&#8217;s special feature on the 1510 Webster Street development in Oakland<\/a>, the world&#8217;s first post-to-plate high-rise development.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Point-and-plate construction systems could be recognised in building standards worldwide, with global engineering firm Fast + Epp investing in full-scale panel testing, which, if successful, will see the point-supported cross-laminated timber flooring systems incorporated into Canada&#8217;s Building Code.
