This move paves the way for future SpaceX satellites to be made from wood rather than aluminium. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Known as the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.smithsonianmag.com\/smart-news\/could-wooden-satellites-reduce-space-junk-the-first-is-set-to-launch-next-year-180983298\/\">LignoSat probe<\/a>, the world&#8217;s first biodegradable satellite was invented by Japanese scientists, who, combined with Japanese forest giant PEFC-certified Sumitomo Forestry, discovered that magnolia wood is the ideal alternative to earth-polluting metals used in satellites.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Named after the Latin word for \u201cwood,\u201d the palm-sized LignoSat is tasked with demonstrating the cosmic potential of renewable material as humans explore living in space.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWith timber, a material we can produce by ourselves, we will be able to build houses, live and work in space forever,\u201d said Takao Doi, an astronaut who has flown on the Space Shuttle and studies human space activities at Kyoto University.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/woodcentral.com.au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/05\/tagreuters.com2024binary_LYNXMPEKA402H-BASEIMAGE.jpg\" alt=\"Takao Doi holds an engineering model of LignoSat during an interview with Reuters at his laboratory at Kyoto University in Kyoto\n\" class=\"wp-image-21836\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Takao Doi holds an engineering model of LignoSat during an interview with Reuters at his laboratory at Kyoto University in Kyoto\n<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>And with a 50-year plan to plant trees and build timber houses on the moon and Mars, Doi\u2019s team decided to develop a NASA-certified wooden satellite to prove wood is a space-grade material.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>\u201cEarly 1900s aeroplanes were made of wood,\u201d said Kyoto University forest science professor Koji Murata. \u201cA wooden satellite should be feasible, too.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cMetal satellites might be banned in the future,\u201d Professor Doi said. \u201cIf we can prove our first wooden satellite works, we want to pitch it to Elon Musk\u2019s SpaceX.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h6 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Research proves beyond doubt that exposed wood can survive in space.<\/h6>\n\n\n\n<p>Already, the material has been tested at the International Space Station<em>,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/woodcentral.com.au\/science-wood-successfully-tested-in-space-for-satiellte-use\/\"><em>with Wood Central reporting in May<\/em><\/a>&nbsp;that&nbsp;<\/em>an international team of scientists&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.kyoto-u.ac.jp\/en\"><em>led by Kyoto University in Japan<\/em><\/a><em>&nbsp;proved beyond doubt<\/em>&nbsp;that exposed wood showed negligible deterioration and maintained stability in space.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The push to use biodegradable materials in satellites comes as the global space industry looks for cleaner, greener and more sustainable materials amid a purge of space waste that is now littering the earth.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<div class=\"youtube-embed\" data-video_id=\"n-Nozfy3i0U\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Green space Japan set to test world&#039;s first wooden satellite | REUTERS\" width=\"696\" height=\"392\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/n-Nozfy3i0U?feature=oembed&#038;enablejsapi=1\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/div>\n<\/div><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\"><em>LignoSat, the world&#8217;s first wooden satellite, was built by Japanese researchers and launched today in an early test of using timber in lunar and Mars exploration. (Photo Credit: Takao Doi)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Following their successful retrieval, SpaceX\u2019s CRS-26 Commercial Resupply Service mission returned the specimens to Earth. Again, they showed little signs of damage, a phenomenon that Professor Murata attributed to the fact that there is no oxygen in space, which could cause wood to burn and no living creatures to cause it to rot.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cOne of the missions of the satellite is to measure the deformation of the wooden structure in space. Wood is durable and stable in one direction but may be prone to dimensional changes and cracking in the other direction,\u201d Professor Murata told the&nbsp;<em>Observer<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h6 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Inside the LignoStat satellite <\/h6>\n\n\n\n<p>The LignoSat is made of honoki, using a traditional Japanese crafts technique without screws or glue. Once deployed, LignoSat will stay in orbit for six months. The electronic components onboard measure how wood endures the extreme environment of space, where temperatures fluctuate from -100 to 100 degrees Celsius every 45 minutes as it orbits from darkness to sunlight.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>LignoSat will also gauge wood\u2019s ability to reduce the impact of space radiation on semiconductors, making it useful for applications such as data centre construction, said Kenji Kariya, a manager at Sumitomo Forestry Tsukuba Research Institute.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>\u201cIt may seem outdated, but wood is actually cutting-edge technology as civilisation heads to the moon and Mars,\u201d he said. \u201cExpansion to space could invigorate the timber industry.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<h6 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Why use wood in space?<\/h6>\n\n\n\n<p>Wood, particularly for small satellites known as CubeSats, has several benefits. \u201cFirst, it eases the design process of satellites because it allows for the penetration of electromagnetic waves,\u201d according to research published by Kyoto University last year.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<div class=\"youtube-embed\" data-video_id=\"BOPo1RlqOL8\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"WISA WOODSAT Stratospheric flight 12 June 2021\" width=\"696\" height=\"392\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/BOPo1RlqOL8?feature=oembed&#038;enablejsapi=1\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/div>\n<\/div><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\"><em>Global scientists have recently turned to wood-based materials to construct the next generation of small-scale satellites.
