{"id":16020,"date":"2024-03-08T08:04:00","date_gmt":"2024-03-07T21:04:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/woodcentral.com.au\/?p=16020"},"modified":"2024-10-21T20:19:50","modified_gmt":"2024-10-21T10:19:50","slug":"before-eudr-green-finance-is-key-to-de-risk-tropical-timber","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/woodcentral.com.au\/before-eudr-green-finance-is-key-to-de-risk-tropical-timber\/","title":{"rendered":"Before EUDR, Green Finance is Key to De-risk Tropical Timber"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/woodcentral.com.au\/worldwide-impact-eu-passes-law-banning-deforestation-products\/\">With the European Union&#8217;s landmark deforestation regulation just months away from effect<\/a>, green finance plays a crucial role in certifying the world&#8217;s tropical forests, which remain at the highest risk of deforestation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>That is according to Yong Teng Koon, who, until mid-2021, was the long-time CEO of the PEFC-aligned Malaysian Timber Certification Council, who yesterday spoke at the International Conference on Sustainable Management of Tropical Forests in Sarawak, Malaysia.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/woodcentral.com.au\/as-demand-soars-itto-calls-for-green-finance-in-tropical-timber\/\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">It comes as Wood Central reported in December<\/a>&nbsp;that the International Tropical Timber Organisation Executive Director, Sheam Satkuru, warned that global leaders must ramp up investment in sustainable tropical forest management or risk large-scale deforestation caused by land use change.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>According to Mr Koon, &#8220;Tropical forests are valuable and essential to be sustainably managed,&#8221; adding that &#8220;to be able to do so, it&#8217;s also important to ensure that SFM must also provide economic value with additional values from ecosystem services.&#8221;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He added, &#8220;The industry also needs supportive policy and an enabling environment, including assurance of long-term tenure.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<div class=\"youtube-embed\" data-video_id=\"RdOZmR-geek\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Natural capital accounting | Lars Hein | TEDxWageningenUniversity\" width=\"696\" height=\"392\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/RdOZmR-geek?feature=oembed&#038;enablejsapi=1\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/div>\n<\/div><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\"><em>In 2019, Lars Hein spoke of combining the environment with economics as part of Natural Capital Accounting. Footage courtesy of\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/@TEDx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">@TedX<\/a>.<\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/woodcentral.com.au\/finally-forests-can-now-account-for-ecosystem-services\/\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">In August<\/a>, Wood Central reported on the importance of ecosystem services and the role that forest certification &#8211; PEFC, Responsible Wood (in Australia) and FSC &#8211; can play in providing value to forest assets.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Over the past few months &#8211; leading up to COP28 in Dubai, interest in ecosystem services has surged<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/woodcentral.com.au\/why-ecosystem-economics-could-fuel-nature-positive-investment\/\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">&nbsp;with the Biden Administration&#8217;s &#8216;Green Deal&#8217; unlocking a multi-trillion dollar industry for &#8220;nature-based assets.&#8221;<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Mr Koon gave a keynote address at a conference organised in conjunction with the 2024 International Day of Forests &#8211; later this month.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The conference was a collaboration between the STA, Forest Department Sarawak (FDS) and the World-Wide Fund for Nature Malaysia, with support from the International Tropical Timber Organisation (ITTO).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<div class=\"youtube-embed\" data-video_id=\"R0qbdfVEohE\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"ITTO, making SFM of tropical forest a global reality\" width=\"696\" height=\"392\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/R0qbdfVEohE?feature=oembed&#038;enablejsapi=1\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/div>\n<\/div><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\"><em>ITTO works to make sustainable management of tropical forests (SFM) a global reality by implementing policies through field-implemented projects and activities to tackle some of the world\u2019s biggest challenges.
