{"id":17618,"date":"2024-05-13T17:54:36","date_gmt":"2024-05-13T07:54:36","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/woodcentral.com.au\/?p=17618"},"modified":"2026-01-23T17:38:53","modified_gmt":"2026-01-23T07:38:53","slug":"beyond-timber-paper-next-gen-wood-products-are-everywhere","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/woodcentral.com.au\/beyond-timber-paper-next-gen-wood-products-are-everywhere\/","title":{"rendered":"Beyond Timber &amp; Paper: Next-Gen Wood Products Are Everywhere!"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>The &#8220;golden age&#8221; of paper-based products is over, with global forest producers using state-of-the-art tech and material science to make the most of wood&nbsp;&#8211; in order&nbsp;to create&nbsp;higher value&nbsp;and longer-lasting forest products.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The push comes as Finnish media report that Mets\u00e4 Group and Stora Enso, two of the world&#8217;s largest manufacturers of forest products, have &#8220;completely abandoned printing paper,&#8221; with both, along with UPM, heavily investing in textiles, biofuels, and engineered wood products.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Last year, Wood Central revealed that Finland was among the countries hardest hit by Russian sanctions&nbsp;&#8211;&nbsp;<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/woodcentral.com.au\/amid-russias-import-ban-finland-carves-bold-new-direction\/\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">with&nbsp;Finnish manufacturers in the southeast&nbsp;relying&nbsp;on pulp to produce high-volume paper products.<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>At the time, Dr Ali Harlin, a research professor at the VTT Technical Research Centre of Finland, said that wood availability was (and is) one of the most critical challenges facing the country&#8217;s \u20ac33 billion industry.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;You can send a thank-you note for that to the Kremlin. Footage courtesy of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/@mmmviestinta\">ja mets\u00e4talousministeri\u00f6n.<\/a><\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>In addition, Dr Harlin said that the EU&#8217;s Green Deal\u2014and its Carbon Sink obligations\u2014mean that scaling up forest harvesting is not an option: &#8220;The growth of forests has also declined in recent years and is unlikely to recover to its previous level.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Together, this has created a &#8220;double whammy&#8221; for the industry, with Luke, the Natural Resources Institute of Finland, confirming that the contribution of wood products to the GDP is shrinking, with the value added to the national economy by each cubic metre of wood processed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Value-enhancing use of the primary components of wood&nbsp;&#8220;Lignin, cellulose and&nbsp;hemicelluose&#8221;&nbsp;is the key,&#8221; according to Duncan Mayes, the founder and principal of&nbsp;Helsinki-based Lignutech Oy.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Yesterday, Wood Central spoke to Mayes, who is at the forefront of the push to create higher-value and renewable products, and said that lignin, a waste<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>byproduct from the pulp industry, and cellulose are now\u00a0being used as an alternative\u00a0or added to a wide range of carbon-intensive materials to &#8220;green up.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Mayes, who\u00a0advises\u00a0MDF Recovery Ltd,\u00a0UK,\u00a0 behind the world&#8217;s first MDF recycling process\u00a0enabling the transition to the circular economy, is working with companies across Europe and Worldwide (including a number of Forest Products companies in Australia, such as Timberlink) to develop the next generation of wood-based products.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;Industry\u00a0is\u00a0now integrating cellulose from\u00a0wood\u00a0into cement, used in concrete structures,&#8221; Mayes said, &#8220;it\u00a0enables the speed of curing of the concrete structure to be increased\u00a0and even 3D printed,\u00a0and at the same time enhances the strength of the concrete,\u00a0and similar fuctionality\u00a0has been found with lignin,\u00a0it\u00a0may also\u00a0reduce the amount of\u00a0corrosion susceptable\u00a0steel needed to reinforce the concrete.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>According to Mayes, our whole approach to forest products must shift: &#8220;Having a holistic view of products\u00a0and the broader industry eco-system\u00a0is\u00a0really\u00a0important,&#8221; adding that &#8220;there is an entire body of work\u00a0evolving\u00a0on this,&#8221; with the industry now using new technologies to manufacture products on demand.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;In Finland and Sweden, there has always been a tradition of multi-sector integration, with the big forest companies having pulp mills, paper mills, board mills, sawmills and&nbsp;most recently&nbsp;mass timber&nbsp;plants&nbsp;combined in an industrial eco-system &#8211; such as the Bio Products Mill concept of Mets\u00e4 Group,&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;These are highly integrated companies,&#8221; Mayes said, adding that the companies &#8220;look at the synergies between the different processing, equipment, machinery, and raw materials&#8230;they&#8217;re highly efficient operations, there is no spare chips,\u00a0bark or sawdust, it&#8217;s all used.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>According to Hans Sohlstr\u00f6m, CEO of Stora Enso, the challenge is to develop new products and find a new market for higher-value products. &#8220;It is just a question of cost, which product concepts to use, and how to do it all economically. That&#8217;s the challenge.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Duncan Mayes will be a panellist at the TimberConstruct conference in Melbourne from August 12 to 13, 2024.
