It comes as the&nbsp;<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/world\/asia-pacific\/australia-sees-second-straight-budget-surplus-inflation-easing-sharply-2024-05-13\/#:~:text=Figures%20from%20Treasury%20showed%20the%20government%20is%20expected,budgets%20in%20the%20black%20in%20nearly%20two%20decades.\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Department of Treasury reported a forecasted AU $9.3 billion surplus for the fiscal year ending June 2024<\/a>\u2014the first back-to-back surpluses in more than 20 years.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>According to a statement attributed to Senator Murray Watt, Australia&#8217;s Minister for Agriculture and Forestry, the new plan underpins the country&#8217;s national strategy for wood fibre and forestry &#8211; and comes after the government vowed to review the 1992 National Forestry Policy Statement in collaboration with the state and territory governments.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;These initiatives are part of a $302 million investment in new plantations and technology and will contribute to achieving and realising a long-term outlook for the forestry industry, which is a key element of regional communities around the country,&#8221;\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/minister.agriculture.gov.au\/watt\/media-releases\/budget-2024-25\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Minister Watt said in a statement.<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"684\" src=\"https:\/\/woodcentral.com.au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/07\/Tanya_Plibersek_27851525495-fotor-2024022314341-1024x684.jpg\" alt=\"Australia's Environment and Water Minister Tanya Plibersek is drafting the new standards as part of a revamp of environmental law and has vowed to apply them to Regional Forest Agreements. Once enacted, the Nature Positive Act will replace Australia&#8217;s current environmental laws,&nbsp;<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/woodcentral.com.au\/new-epa-logging-rules-key-to-australias-nature-positive-act\/\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">with Tanya Plibersek, Minister for Environment and Water, vowing to apply the new rules to Regional Forestry Agreements.<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Beyond new environmental regulation, the Australian government has pledged $18.5m, as part of the\u00a0Future Made in Australia\u00a0plan, to use renewable materials, like woody biomass, to develop Sustainable Aviation Fuels (or SAFs) &#8211;<a href=\"https:\/\/minister.infrastructure.gov.au\/c-king\/media-release\/delivering-resilient-and-prosperous-future-regional-australia\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">\u00a0with $1.7 billion pledged over the next decade as part of a supersized Future Made in Australia Innovation Fund.<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;We will fast-track support for a low-carbon liquid fuel industry, with an initial focus on sustainable aviation fuel and renewable diesel to support emissions reduction in the aviation, heavy vehicle, rail and maritime sectors,&#8221;\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/minister.infrastructure.gov.au\/c-king\/media-release\/investment-deliver-future-made-australia\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">according to a statement attributed to Catherine King, Minister for Infrastructure, Transport, Regional Development and Local Government<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"683\" src=\"https:\/\/woodcentral.com.au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/01\/AdobeStock_100164216-fotor-20240112133218-1024x683.jpg\" alt=\"The Port of Singapore, the world's second busiest shipping port, has secured more than 500,000 tones of biomass which it is looking to use as sustainable marine fuels (or SMF's). (Photo Credit: Adobe Images)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>For housing, more than $1.9 billion has been invested in concessional loan financing for community housing to help drive new social and affordable dwellings. According to Kristy McBain, Minister for Regional Development, Local Governments and Territories, this will help\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/minister.infrastructure.gov.au\/mcbain\/media-release\/delivering-resilient-and-prosperous-future-regional-australia\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">&#8220;build 40,000 social and affordable dwellings through the Housing Australia Future Fund and the National Housing Accord, including across regional Australia.&#8221;<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Housing affordability is a key focus for the Budget,&nbsp;<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/budget.gov.au\/content\/02-building-homes.htm\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">with $6.2&nbsp;billion allocated to housing initiatives<\/a>&nbsp;&#8211; bringing the total spend to $32 billion since Prime Minister Albanese pledged to develop a Housing Accord in 2022. The timber industry &#8211; responsible for more than 80% of housing frames Australia-wide, is well equipped to meet this demand.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/ausfpa.com.au\/australian-timber-can-help-ease-housing-crisis-with-capacity-to-build-50000-extra-homes-each-year\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Yesterday<\/a>, Diana Hallam, CEO of the Australian Forest Products Association, said that the timber industry &#8220;has the product on the shelf construct the new and climate-friendly homes of tomorrow and capacity to produce more&#8230;with the right economic conditions and regulatory settings, we can make it happen.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"682\" src=\"https:\/\/woodcentral.com.au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/05\/shutterstock_1993513826-fotor-20240507181324-1024x682.jpg\" alt=\"The FWPA is working towards keeping Australian structural timbers price competitive amid a chronic housing shortage. (Photo Credit: Latitude Images via Shutterstock Images)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>It comes after a report commissioned by the industry and Master Builders Australia found that timber sales, after the Covid-pandemic spike, have fallen more than 500,000 cubic metres &#8211; which means the timber industry now can supply products for 50,000 more homes every year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>To do this, both the Australian Forest Products Association and Master Builders Australia are pushing for several reforms:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Derisking finance for building new homes<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Cutting red tape for building approvals to encourage more timber in construction<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Relocation stamp duty exemptions<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Encouraging greater take-up of modular and prefabricated timber dwellings with specifications that allow for economic builds and faster building approvals<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Providing measures to workforce capacity, including incentivised apprenticeship programs, immigration visas and upskilling\/retraining the current workforce<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;When it comes to timber, it&#8217;s not a materials supply issue.
