{"id":18073,"date":"2024-05-30T23:09:20","date_gmt":"2024-05-30T13:09:20","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/woodcentral.com.au\/?p=18073"},"modified":"2024-10-21T20:19:20","modified_gmt":"2024-10-21T10:19:20","slug":"faster-greener-canadas-top-bank-says-yes-to-mass-timber","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/woodcentral.com.au\/faster-greener-canadas-top-bank-says-yes-to-mass-timber\/","title":{"rendered":"Faster &#038; Greener: Canada&#8217;s Top Bank Says &#8216;Yes&#8217; to Mass Timber"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Mass timber made up just 1% of North American building materials in <a href=\"https:\/\/thoughtleadership.rbc.com\/timber-rising-how-wood-can-spur-canadas-green-building-drive\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">2022<\/a>, but that is changing&#8230;and fast. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/woodcentral.com.au\/americas-mass-timber-takeover-how-pdx-sparked-new-wooden-age\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Last month<\/a>, Wood Central reported that mid-rise and high-rise buildings made from cross-laminated timber and glulam are now mainstream across the United States, with Canada pushing to expand plants from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nelsonstar.com\/local-news\/kalesnikoff-opening-third-mass-timber-facility-near-castlegar-7326817\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">B.C.<\/a>\u00a0to <a href=\"https:\/\/forestnet.com\/2023-november-december-growth\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Alberta<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.lesprom.com\/en\/news\/Hasslacher_Group_invests_in_Ontario_mass_timber_producer_Element5_111818\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Ontario<\/a>\u00a0to <a href=\"https:\/\/getfea.com\/engineered-wood-products-mass-timber\/mass-timber-plant-being-developed-in-nova-scotia-could-reap-economic-benefits-throughout-the-region#:~:text=Timber%20Offsite%20Construction-,Mass%20Timber%20Plant%20Being%20Developed%20in%20Nova%20Scotia,Economic%20Benefits%20Throughout%20the%20Region&amp;text=A%20%24215%20million%20(CAD)%20mass,3%2D13%2D24).\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Nova Scotia<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;The demand is extremely high for mass timber now,&#8221; according to Frank Gannon, Western Archrib&#8217;s director of stakeholder engagement, <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.msn.com\/en-ca\/news\/canada\/is-mass-timber-the-next-big-thing-in-cheaper-greener-construction-more-provinces-are-saying-yes\/ar-BB1neTQ2?ocid=BingNewsSearch\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">who spoke to CBC News inside the company&#8217;s new 155,000-square-foot facility, now struggling to keep up with orders.<\/a> &#8220;We are filling capacity slots about ten months out \u2014 so yes, the phone&#8217;s ringing off the hook.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/thoughtleadership.rbc.com\/timber-rising-how-wood-can-spur-canadas-green-building-drive\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Now, a report by the Royal Bank of Canada<\/a> (RBA), more than 660 mass timber projects (up to the end of 2022) are rising across Canada &#8211; almost double the number rising across the U.S. until that point. And of those out of the ground or in the pipeline, 87% of projects are clustered around the populated centres of B.C., Ontario and Quebec.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"778\" height=\"542\" src=\"https:\/\/woodcentral.com.au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/05\/Screenshot_30-5-2024_13847_thoughtleadership.rbc_.com_-1.jpeg\" alt=\"Screenshot 30 5 2024 13847 thoughtleadership.rbc .com 1\" class=\"wp-image-18079\" srcset=\"https:\/\/woodcentral.com.au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/05\/Screenshot_30-5-2024_13847_thoughtleadership.rbc_.com_-1.jpeg 778w, https:\/\/woodcentral.com.au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/05\/Screenshot_30-5-2024_13847_thoughtleadership.rbc_.com_-1-300x209.jpeg 300w, https:\/\/woodcentral.com.au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/05\/Screenshot_30-5-2024_13847_thoughtleadership.rbc_.com_-1-768x535.jpeg 768w, https:\/\/woodcentral.com.au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/05\/Screenshot_30-5-2024_13847_thoughtleadership.rbc_.com_-1-696x485.jpeg 696w, https:\/\/woodcentral.com.au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/05\/Screenshot_30-5-2024_13847_thoughtleadership.rbc_.com_-1-603x420.jpeg 603w, https:\/\/woodcentral.com.au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/05\/Screenshot_30-5-2024_13847_thoughtleadership.rbc_.com_-1-100x70.jpeg 100w, https:\/\/woodcentral.com.au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/05\/Screenshot_30-5-2024_13847_thoughtleadership.rbc_.com_-1-600x418.jpeg 600w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 778px) 100vw, 778px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Source: RBC Climate Action Institute, Mantle Developments, 2022<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>However, the RBA argues that, with the correct policy settings, a pivot to prioritising mass timber construction over steel and concrete will not only cut Canada&#8217;s total emissions by 10% over the next seven years but will also unlock a CA $1 billion mass timber industry, &#8220;with a share of this growth anticipated to flow to Indigenous communities.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h6 class=\"wp-block-heading\">And Canada is responding. <\/h6>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/woodcentral.com.au\/canadas-600m-bet-on-quick-builds-to-end-housing-crisis\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">In April<\/a>, Wood Central reported that the Canadian federal government and the Ontario and British Columbian provincial governments are changing building codes to allow mass timber buildings to rise 12-storey (nationally) and 18-storey (in both provinces).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Current <a href=\"https:\/\/www.arcgis.com\/apps\/dashboards\/041e338d2a4d4b3a82ff2c238a9f0f93\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">federal tracking<\/a> shows mass timber is most commonly used in institutional buildings, including <a href=\"https:\/\/gecarchitecture.com\/projects\/lawrence-grassi-middle-school\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">schools<\/a> and&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.archdaily.com\/163604\/cassie-campbell-community-center-perkinswill\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">community centres<\/a>. However, as more research has emerged attesting to the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/ostrnrcan-dostrncan.canada.ca\/entities\/publication\/7cdfa294-9807-40db-9d22-96074c319356\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">fire safety of tall wood structures<\/a>, recent changes to building codes have opened the door to higher buildings &#8211;<a href=\"https:\/\/woodcentral.com.au\/31-storey-mass-timber-high-rise-to-ease-torontos-squeeze\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">&nbsp;&nbsp;including a 31-storey mixed-use building before Toronto planning authorities.<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"832\" height=\"1024\" src=\"https:\/\/woodcentral.com.au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/05\/screen-shot-2022-07-08-at-3-fotor-2024052915045-832x1024.jpg\" alt=\"If approved, the 31-storey cross-laminated timber building would be Canada's tallest hybrid timber building and one of the largest anywhere in the world. (Image Credit: Icon Architects dated 2022)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;CLT is the transformational material for tall buildings,&#8221; Brian Merwin, the senior vice president with Mercer Mass Timbers, said, adding that most of the material used in high-rises&nbsp;is for the floors. &#8220;[It&#8217;s]&nbsp;sort of filled that missing gap to get us to where we are today.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Combined with glulam beams and columns, cross-laminated timber floors and walls can offer a viable alternative to traditional steel-and-concrete building systems. <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/woodcentral.com.au\/clt-floors-excel-mass-timber-beats-steel-in-building-footprint\/\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">A recent U.S. study<\/a> demonstrated that switching out steel and replacing it with CLT floors, glulam beams, and columns made buildings 35% lighter, emitted 40% less carbon, and used substantially less concrete in the foundations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h6 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Faster and lighter<\/h6>\n\n\n\n<p>According to Robert Malczyk, a structural engineer and principal at Vancouver Structural Engineering, mass timber carries several advantages over concrete. It&#8217;s&nbsp;faster to work with than concrete, he told CBC, because panels can be prefabricated off-site and assembled on-site.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And Mr Malczyk speaks from experience &#8211; adding that his own fire-storey Vancouver office, made from mass timber, was erected in just 12 days.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-4-3 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<div class=\"youtube-embed\" data-video_id=\"Tew8Fit76sE\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Disruption for Construction\" width=\"696\" height=\"522\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/Tew8Fit76sE?feature=oembed&#038;enablejsapi=1\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/div>\n<\/div><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\"><em>Robert Malczyk is the principal at Vancouver&#8217;s Timber Engineering Inc. Analysts estimate that if demand grows at 14.5% annually, it could reach CA $4.9 billion by 2030.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As it stands, Canada&#8217;s market share of mass timber (up to 2023) was CA $379 million, or just under 20% of the global market.
