{"id":18330,"date":"2024-06-10T15:16:53","date_gmt":"2024-06-10T05:16:53","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/woodcentral.com.au\/?p=18330"},"modified":"2024-10-21T20:19:16","modified_gmt":"2024-10-21T10:19:16","slug":"americas-ports-flooded-with-plywood-from-across-the-globe","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/woodcentral.com.au\/americas-ports-flooded-with-plywood-from-across-the-globe\/","title":{"rendered":"America&#8217;s Ports Flooded with Plywood from Across the Globe"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>More than 34,000 cubic metres of Russian plywood have entered American ports so far this year, <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.lesprom.com\/en\/analytics\/Russias_exports_of_plywood_to_United_States_shoot_217_in_April_2024_3587\/\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">a 15% drop in volumes over the past 12 months<\/a>, as builders now scramble for building suppliers to meet Covid-era demand for housing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>At the same time that the United States is weaning off Russia\u2014still its 10th largest trading partner\u2014total plywood imports are surging, with 1,532,800 cubic metres of imports fueling the country&#8217;s recovering building and construction industry\u2014<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/woodcentral.com.au\/why-north-america-is-the-best-bet-for-global-lumber-in-2024\/\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">now dubbed the world&#8217;s best bet for global timber.<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>That is according to the latest figures from the United States Department of Agriculture, which reports that total imports from January to April are up more than 44% over the past 12 months\u2014bolstered by a surge in Vietnamese imports.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Vietnam (now responsible for 295,900 cubic metres) is America&#8217;s largest market for plywood, followed by Brazil (282,100 cubic metres), Indonesia (194,900 cubic metres), Canada (155,400 cubic metres) and Chile (154,200 cubic metres).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"681\" src=\"https:\/\/woodcentral.com.au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/06\/HWD56D-1-fotor-2024031310415-1024x681.jpg.webp\" alt=\"HWD56D 1 fotor 2024031310415 1024x681.jpg\" class=\"wp-image-18331\" srcset=\"https:\/\/woodcentral.com.au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/06\/HWD56D-1-fotor-2024031310415-1024x681.jpg.webp 1024w, https:\/\/woodcentral.com.au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/06\/HWD56D-1-fotor-2024031310415-1024x681.jpg-300x200.webp 300w, https:\/\/woodcentral.com.au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/06\/HWD56D-1-fotor-2024031310415-1024x681.jpg-768x511.webp 768w, https:\/\/woodcentral.com.au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/06\/HWD56D-1-fotor-2024031310415-1024x681.jpg-696x463.webp 696w, https:\/\/woodcentral.com.au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/06\/HWD56D-1-fotor-2024031310415-1024x681.jpg-632x420.webp 632w, https:\/\/woodcentral.com.au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/06\/HWD56D-1-fotor-2024031310415-1024x681.jpg-600x399.webp 600w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Vietnam has emerged as one of the world\u2019s most important plywood markets, fuelling a surge in secondary processed wood products. (Photo Credit: Hemis \/ Alamy Stock Photo)<br><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/woodcentral.com.au\/trade-war-america-relies-on-vietnam-and-china-for-plywood\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">It comes as last month<\/a>, Wood Central reported that the surge in Vietnamese imports &#8211; up 148.2% on the same time the previous year, comes after the US Department of Commerce issued a\u00a0<em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.lesprom.com\/en\/news\/U_S_Department_of_Commerce_rules_on_Vietnam-imported_hardwood_plywood_circumvention_case_108701\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">ruling<\/a><\/em> finding that\u00a0a large portion of\u00a0hardwood plywood products entering the US came from China\u2014circumventing federal anti-dumping laws.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As a result, the US government introduced new tariffs on plywood that entered supply chains &#8211; with prosecutors pushing to expose traders that use third-party countries to bring Chinese products into the United States. That includes <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/woodcentral.com.au\/lacey-act-exposes-us-familys-65m-illegal-plywood-scheme\/#:~:text=A%20Miami%20husband%20and%20wife%20have%20been%20sentenced,and%20customs%20laws.%20Their%20employee%20was%20also%20sentenced.\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">a Miami couple, who earlier this year, was sentenced to 57 months earlier this year for operating a US $65m illegal plywood scheme, which saw Chinese-manufactured timber smuggled through Panama and Malaysia to circumvent anti-dumping laws.<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h6 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Why is global plywood now flooding US ports?<\/h6>\n\n\n\n<p>Housing starts are up across the United States, and house builders are fast adding new inventory to the market, <a href=\"https:\/\/fortune.com\/2024\/06\/01\/housing-market-crisis-inventory-buyer-demand-home-prices-mortgage-rates-fed-cuts\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">according to a report by Fortune last week.<\/a> While sky-high mortgage rates and prices continue to weigh on first-time home buyers, <a href=\"https:\/\/tradingeconomics.com\/united-states\/housing-starts#:~:text=Housing%20starts%20in%20the%20US%20rose%205.7%25%20month-over-month,home%20prices%20continue%20to%20weigh%20on%20home%20builders.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">housing starts rose 5.7% month-over-month to 1.36 million in April 2024<\/a>, continuing an improving trend fuelled by single-family, multi-family apartment and townhouse construction.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<div class=\"youtube-embed\" data-video_id=\"CLVBH0tOI0k\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"US Housing Starts Bounce Back Sharply\" width=\"696\" height=\"392\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/CLVBH0tOI0k?feature=oembed&#038;enablejsapi=1\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/div>\n<\/div><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\"><em>Earlier this year, Bloomberg reported that residential starts increased 10.7% in February, the largest since May 2023, to a 1.52 million annualized rate, government data showed.
