And that&#8217;s even before traders grapple with rising fuel costs,<a href=\"https:\/\/woodcentral.com.au\/global-timber-hit-hard-as-red-sea-crisis-fuels-even-higher-costs\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"> a byproduct of the Red Sea Crisis, which is now entering its ninth month<\/a>, causing merchants and end-users to feel the pinch.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.lesprom.com\/en\/news\/Sawmills_continue_to_cut_production_but_lumber_prices_are_not_rising_113885\/\/\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">That is according to Lesprom, a B2B marketplace for global wood products<\/a>, which reports that EU, North American, and even Russian mills are being squeezed out &#8211; as stagnant lumber prices continue to erode profit margins across the value chain.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In recent months,<em><a href=\"https:\/\/woodcentral.com.au\/why-north-america-is-the-best-bet-for-global-lumber-in-2024\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">\u00a0experts have reported that the United States is the world&#8217;s &#8220;best bet for global lumber.&#8221;<\/a><\/em>\u00a0However, despite hopes that a long-awaited housing rebound, which has\u00a0<em><a href=\"https:\/\/woodcentral.com.au\/americas-ports-flooded-with-plywood-from-across-the-globe\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">resulted in massive spikes in plywood entering ports<\/a><\/em>, would stimulate a sluggish global market, the &#8220;stop-start&#8221; North American construction markets remain soft, with sawmill closures failing to curb the drop to pre-pandemic levels.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;Lumber prices have dropped during the building season, indicating trouble in residential construction and home-improvement markets due to\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.lesprom.com\/en\/news\/U_S_mortgage_rates_drop_for_fourth_straight_week_113850\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">high<\/a>\u00a0borrowing costs,&#8221; <a href=\"https:\/\/www.lesprom.com\/en\/news\/Sawmills_continue_to_cut_production_but_lumber_prices_are_not_rising_113885\/\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">according to Lesprom&#8217;s Lumber Industry Insights<\/a>, echoing <em><a href=\"https:\/\/indd.adobe.com\/view\/bf174fe1-8471-45b9-ab25-4e7c98ea043e\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Skansa USA&#8217;s quarterly report<\/a>,<\/em> showing that the American market for wood-based building materials (including lumber, MDF, and engineered wood products) remains sluggish <em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.forbes.com\/sites\/simonmoore\/2024\/06\/22\/what-to-expect-from-the-fed-on-interest-rates-for-the-rest-of-2024\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">due to the Fed Reserve&#8217;s expected rate cuts failing to materialise.<\/a><\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"768\" src=\"https:\/\/woodcentral.com.au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/06\/PHH39N-1-1024x768.jpg\" alt=\"America is now flooded with an oversupply of lumber, with the failure of Fed Reserve rate cuts leading to a stop-start housing economy. (Photo Credit: Maksym Yemelyanov \/ Alamy Stock Photo)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h6 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Prices for two-by-fours, a key housing indicator, now flashes alarm!<\/h6>\n\n\n\n<p>Two-by-four prices, which&nbsp;<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.wsj.com\/articles\/lumber-prices-are-falling-fast-turning-hoarders-into-sellers-11623749401?mod=article_inline\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">skyrocketed during the pandemic<\/a>, have become a reliable leading indicator of the housing market. Last week, Wood Central reported that supersized data centre construction is helping to prop up the sluggish US building and construction industry.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>However, despite hopes that rate easing would help stimulate the industry, persistently sky-high interest rates have left developers struggling to cover the borrowing costs of development, <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/woodcentral.com.au\/america-is-flooded-with-lumber-as-developers-are-squeezed-out\/\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">leaving the market to be propped up by government projects and big tech.<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h6 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Expenses have risen sharply since 2020<\/h6>\n\n\n\n<p>At the same time that demand and pricing have stagnated, production costs, from labour to logs, have risen sharply, causing many mills to operate at a loss.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/russtaylorglobal.com\/north-americas-top-10-lumber-producers-big-players-waiting-for-market-signals\/\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Earlier this year<\/a>, Russ Taylor Consulting, one of the world&#8217;s top forest consultants who, for the past 30 years, has analysed US, Canadian, Russian, Chinese and European timber markets, said the industry is in a state of correction:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;As lumber prices moved below breakeven in some regions in 2023, higher-cost mills were closed, sometimes to rationalise timber supplies around multiple company sawmill sites. Nine sawmills were permanently closed in 2023. So far in 2024 (up to March), three new sawmills have started operating in the US South while nine more sawmills\u2014in all regions of North America, except Eastern Canada\u2014have announced closures.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"660\" height=\"559\" src=\"https:\/\/woodcentral.com.au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/07\/Top-10-N-America-Lumber-Producers.jpg.webp\" alt=\"Top 10 N America Lumber Producers.jpg\" class=\"wp-image-18810\" srcset=\"https:\/\/woodcentral.com.au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/07\/Top-10-N-America-Lumber-Producers.jpg.webp 660w, https:\/\/woodcentral.com.au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/07\/Top-10-N-America-Lumber-Producers.jpg-300x254.webp 300w, https:\/\/woodcentral.com.au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/07\/Top-10-N-America-Lumber-Producers.jpg-496x420.webp 496w, https:\/\/woodcentral.com.au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/07\/Top-10-N-America-Lumber-Producers.jpg-600x508.webp 600w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 660px) 100vw, 660px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Russ Taylor Consulting said US <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.lesprom.com\/en\/news\/North_American_sawmill_capacity_declines_in_2023_amid_falling_lumber_demand_112863\/\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">sawmill capacity fell<\/a>&nbsp;2% in 2023 due to closures outweighing openings and expansions. Despite Russ Taylor Consulting&#8217;s hopes that US housing would rebound, Lesprom reports that new starts&nbsp;<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.lesprom.com\/en\/news\/May_building_permits_and_housing_starts_show_significant_decline_113756\/\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">fell<\/a>&nbsp;by 17% between February and May, while building permits for residential units fell to their lowest level since June 2020 in May.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h6 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Major sawmills are up for sale, but who is buying?<\/h6>\n\n\n\n<p>West Fraser\u2014North America&#8217;s largest lumber producer\u2014<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/woodcentral.com.au\/west-fraser-top-osb-producer-exits-pulp-for-mass-timber\/\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">has been exiting high-volume, low-value pulp and lumber assets<\/a>, including British Columbia and Florida, as well as curtailing production in Arkansas<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.wsj.com\/finance\/commodities-futures\/lumber-prices-housing-market-31944c27?mod=djemlogistics_h\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Whilst the Wall Street Journal (WSJ) reported <\/a>that Teal-Jones Group, a Canadian firm, filed for bankruptcy protection due to high costs and low lumber prices, putting its assets, including multiple mills, up for sale.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And whilst forest product executives expect prices to rebound once more mills close and supply aligns with reduced demand.
