Timber Imports in Freefall"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>&#8220;Who would buy a sawmill?&#8221; <a href=\"https:\/\/woodcentral.com.au\/global-timber-crunch-why-lumber-producers-are-slashing-volumes\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">That was the question posed in Wood Central&#8217;s article last week<\/a>, which reported that lumber producers are struggling amid a global slowdown in residential construction.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>However, <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/woodcentral.com.au\/americas-ports-flooded-with-plywood-from-across-the-globe\/\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">while much of the attention has centred around the sluggish North American market<\/a>, dubbed the world&#8217;s &#8220;best bet&#8221; for global lumber, and the Chinese market\u2014<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/woodcentral.com.au\/china-curbs-house-builds-to-fight-growing-supply-glut\/\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">where thousands of unsold dwellings now remain vacant<\/a>\u2014<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/woodcentral.com.au\/indias-tiger-economy-to-fuel-global-timber-supply-for-years\/\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">India is seen as a growing market for manufacturers and exporters<\/a>, with a seemingly endless hunger for timber.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h6 class=\"wp-block-heading\">That is, until it wasn&#8217;t!<\/h6>\n\n\n\n<p>However, the rivers of gold could be ending &#8211; with Wood Central revealing that India is now cutting back on lumber, signalling a potential false dawn for exporters eying the Indian market as a pivot from China.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>According to data from the Indian Ministry of Commerce and Industry, imports for the first quarter of 2024 were down 37% over the same period last year. Whilst <a href=\"https:\/\/www.lesprom.com\/en\/analytics\/United_States_exports_of_lumber_to_India_increase_28_in_May_2024_3724\/?chart=pieCountry\">more recent data from April and May (considered off-peak for construction) shows that declining imports continue.<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1003\" height=\"752\" src=\"https:\/\/woodcentral.com.au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/07\/image-1.png\" alt=\"image 1\" class=\"wp-image-18983\" srcset=\"https:\/\/woodcentral.com.au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/07\/image-1.png 1003w, https:\/\/woodcentral.com.au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/07\/image-1-300x225.png 300w, https:\/\/woodcentral.com.au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/07\/image-1-768x576.png 768w, https:\/\/woodcentral.com.au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/07\/image-1-696x522.png 696w, https:\/\/woodcentral.com.au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/07\/image-1-560x420.png 560w, https:\/\/woodcentral.com.au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/07\/image-1-80x60.png 80w, https:\/\/woodcentral.com.au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/07\/image-1-265x198.png 265w, https:\/\/woodcentral.com.au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/07\/image-1-600x450.png 600w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1003px) 100vw, 1003px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>And it&#8217;s not just lumber\u2014used in framing, flooring, wall panelling, and window framing, with imports of timber furniture and log imports sinking&#8230;and fast!<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In essence, traders are taking less timber during the busy construction months (September to March) than in the previous year, which is a massive reversal of the 137% increase between 2022 and 2023.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>India\u2014<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/oec.world\/en\/profile\/hs\/wood-products\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">as one of the world&#8217;s top 10 importers of wood products\u2014<\/a>has been flagged as a major growth market producer of roundwood, lumber, and furniture, <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.itto.int\/top_stories\/2021\/09\/14\/demand_for_wood_to_surge_in_india_by_2030_new_report\/\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">with the ITTO reporting that roundwood will grow 70%, from 57 million cubic metres in 2020 to 98 million cubic metres in 2030<\/a>, fueled to a large degree by a surge in construction activity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>According<a href=\"https:\/\/groundreport.in\/why-india-needs-to-import-timber-from-other-countries\/#:~:text=As%20per%20the%20Centre%20for%20Science%20and%20Environment,the%20remaining%2033%20million%20cubic%20meters%20are%20imported.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"> to the Indian Centre for Science and Environment<\/a>, the country&#8217;s 2022 demand for lumber was 63 million cubic metres \u2013 30 million cubic metres for domestic production and 33 million cubic metres from imported sources.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"604\" src=\"https:\/\/woodcentral.com.au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/07\/2J8TE8R-1024x604.jpg\" alt=\"Sluggish economic activity is crunching lumber pricing, at the same time that costs of production and distribution are skyrocketing. (Photo Credit: Brain light \/ Alamy Stock Photo)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Turning to Australia, New Zealand, Canada, the United States<em><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/woodcentral.com.au\/india-targets-brazil-for-log-supply-as-plywood-demand-surges\/\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">, Brazil<\/a><\/em>, and even Uruguay, Indian importers have been aggressive in the market, dominating export orders. Last year, Wood Central reported<em><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/woodcentral.com.au\/india-drives-91-of-australian-softwood-exports-in-april-2023\/\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"> that 91% of softwood leaving Australian shores arrived at Indian ports.<\/a><\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h6 class=\"wp-block-heading\">India&#8217;s housing market is finally showing signs of fatigue.<\/h6>\n\n\n\n<p>However, like all good things, India&#8217;s hunger for lumber has hit a roadblock &#8211; just as its booming real estate market, &#8220;its tiger economy&#8221; has slowed:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;After steady growth in home sales in India&#8217;s top seven markets for over three years, sales of new homes declined for the first time in the April-June quarter,&#8221; <a href=\"https:\/\/www.businesstoday.in\/latest\/economy\/story\/indian-housing-market-shows-signs-of-fatigue-sales-decline-across-top-cities-in-q2-2024-435059-2024-06-28\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">according to an article in India&#8217;s Business Today last week.<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"768\" src=\"https:\/\/woodcentral.com.au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/02\/Antilia-reliance-Mukesh-Ambani-Wood-Central-1320x990.jpg-fotor-2024021373636-1024x768.jpg\" alt=\"Timbers worldwide are being imported and used to build up India's mega-cities, including Mumbai, where Chicago-based Perkins &amp; Will designed Antilia, the largest residential project undertaken by Australia's largest construction company, CIMIC, formerly Leighton Holdings. (Photo Credit: Medium)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>According to data from Anarock Property Research, sales in the June quarter fell by 8%\u2014120,340 housing units were sold last quarter, compared to 130,170 in the previous quarter.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Among the key markets, Hyderabad reported the steepest decline &#8211; down 23% quarter-on-quarter; this is followed by Kolkata (-18%), Chennai (-9%), Bengaluru (-8%) and Pune (-8%).
