{"id":19342,"date":"2024-07-25T20:20:46","date_gmt":"2024-07-25T10:20:46","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/woodcentral.com.au\/?p=19342"},"modified":"2024-10-21T20:17:35","modified_gmt":"2024-10-21T10:17:35","slug":"milwaukees-50-storey-timber-skyscraper-to-smash-records","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/woodcentral.com.au\/milwaukees-50-storey-timber-skyscraper-to-smash-records\/","title":{"rendered":"Milwaukee\u2019s 50-Storey Timber Skyscraper to Smash Records"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>The world&#8217;s tallest mass timber building could be built over a snow pile after the City of Milwaukee selected The Neutral Project \u2014<a href=\"https:\/\/woodcentral.com.au\/edison-rises-top-us-timber-skyscraper-to-use-100k-ft%c2%b3-of-lumber\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">the developer behind The Edison<\/a>, a 32-storey timber-hybrid building under construction\u2014to develop an even more impressive 50-storey timber skyscraper, as part of a $700m activation of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.marcuscenter.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Marcus Performing Art Center garage snow pile.<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;Designed by MGA | Michael Green Architecture, a global leader in mass timber buildings,&#8221; The Neutral Project said, with &#8220;the project eventually including the tallest mass timber in the world and the tallest building in Wisconsin.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A short hop, skip and jump from The Edison &#8211; which is now using 100,000 cubic feet of cross-laminated timber panels and glulam beams over a post-tensioned concrete base; the timber building is part of a scheme which includes &#8220;multiple mixed-use building(s),&#8221; delivered over several phases.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"663\" src=\"https:\/\/woodcentral.com.au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/07\/ripsnowpile4-1024x663.jpg\" alt=\"ripsnowpile4\" class=\"wp-image-19343\" srcset=\"https:\/\/woodcentral.com.au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/07\/ripsnowpile4-1024x663.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/woodcentral.com.au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/07\/ripsnowpile4-300x194.jpg 300w, https:\/\/woodcentral.com.au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/07\/ripsnowpile4-768x497.jpg 768w, https:\/\/woodcentral.com.au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/07\/ripsnowpile4-696x451.jpg 696w, https:\/\/woodcentral.com.au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/07\/ripsnowpile4-1068x691.jpg 1068w, https:\/\/woodcentral.com.au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/07\/ripsnowpile4-649x420.jpg 649w, https:\/\/woodcentral.com.au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/07\/ripsnowpile4-1320x854.jpg 1320w, https:\/\/woodcentral.com.au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/07\/ripsnowpile4-600x388.jpg 600w, https:\/\/woodcentral.com.au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/07\/ripsnowpile4.jpg 1500w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">The project is located just a short walk from The Edison &#8211; which is currently North America&#8217;s largest mass timber building under construction.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>The project could consist of &#8220;up to 750 residential units, &#8220;90,000 square feet of office space, 40,000 square feet of retail space, 300 hotel rooms, 1,100 structured parking spaces, and public plazas\/walkways.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Wood Central understands that the City of Milwaukee has granted the developers a one-year exclusive hold over the project to shore up financing. It also represents a forward-thinking Milwaukee, open to outside investment and ideas, and I thank The Neutral Project for their confidence in Milwaukee&#8217;s future.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The latest project comes as tall buildings made from wood are becoming mainstream across America, <a href=\"https:\/\/woodcentral.com.au\/americas-mass-timber-takeover-how-pdx-sparked-new-wooden-age\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">with developers turning to timber-based hybrid systems to reduce steel, concrete, and glass in buildings.<\/a> According to research published by the University of Georgia, demand for timber buildings, especially in the American South,&nbsp;<em><a href=\"https:\/\/woodcentral.com.au\/mass-timber-could-surge-25-fold-fueled-by-us-south-high-rise\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">is expected to surge 25-fold over the next 50 years<\/a><\/em>. That&#8217;s because they are&nbsp;<em><a href=\"https:\/\/woodcentral.com.au\/clt-floors-excel-mass-timber-beats-steel-in-building-footprint\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">lighter, more sustainable, and faster to construct than conventional steel and concrete systems.<\/a><\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;There are 1,500 buildings that have been constructed or are in design across the United States,&#8221;
