{"id":20540,"date":"2024-10-25T11:21:35","date_gmt":"2024-10-25T01:21:35","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/woodcentral.com.au\/?p=20540"},"modified":"2024-10-25T11:22:26","modified_gmt":"2024-10-25T01:22:26","slug":"worlds-first-fully-electric-timber-truck-with-crane-hits-the-roads","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/woodcentral.com.au\/worlds-first-fully-electric-timber-truck-with-crane-hits-the-roads\/","title":{"rendered":"World&#8217;s First Fully Electric Timber Truck with Crane Hits the Roads!"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>The world&#8217;s first fully electric logging truck, equipped with a working crane, is now on road- with the multi-year Swedish project a major step towards decarbonising the carbon-intensive forest-to-terminal transport process.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Wood Central understands that the new 80-tonne vehicle has been rolled out after years of collaboration between Scania, one of the world&#8217;s leading truck and bus manufacturers, and SCA, <a href=\"https:\/\/finance.yahoo.com\/news\/15-biggest-lumber-companies-world-121855807.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Europe&#8217;s largest private logging company<\/a> &#8211; which is now pushing to make the total supply chain for timber products fossil-free.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;This is an important project for us to continue contributing to a more sustainable society,&#8221; according to Ulf Larsson, the CEO of SCA. \u201cBy managing the forest and making renewable products that can replace those with a high carbon footprint, SCA creates about 13 million tons of positive climate benefits each year. That figure can improve as we transition the heavy road transports in our value chain.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>&#8220;We need price pressure on the vehicles, more charging infrastructure, a better power grid, and that working time regulations offer flexibility related to charging. Only then will heavy traffic gradually move towards more electrification.&#8221;<\/p>\n<cite>Ulf Larsson, the CEO of SCA Skog, on the challenges around fully electrifying the harvest and haulage process for forest products.<\/cite><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>According to Anton Ahlinder, SCA Skog&#8217;s Head of Business Development, the new truck <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sca.com\/en\/media\/news\/2022\/scas-world-unique-electric-timber-truck-from-scania-has-arrived\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">follows in the footsteps of an earlier model that has, for two years, successfully hauled logs between a terminal and SCA&#8217;s Obbola paper mill.<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"1024\" src=\"https:\/\/woodcentral.com.au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/09\/457621626_910903767736173_4101738114088274712_n-fotor-2024091116748-1024x1024.jpg\" alt=\"SCA\u2019s new electric timber truck with a crane has now been premiered to a wide audience at the Elmia Lastbil fair. (Photo Credit: SCA)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>A key cog in the TREE project, a Swedish-led initiative targeting 50% of the forestry industry&#8217;s new trucks to be fully electric by 2030, the new trucks could result in a 170-ton drop in emissions per truck.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;Our new electric timber truck has a better range and will drive to timber storage areas in the forest, where it loads the timber for further transport to one of our timber terminals.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Mr Ahlinder said<a href=\"https:\/\/www.sca.com\/en\/media\/news\/2024\/great-interest-in-scas-new-electric-timber-truck\/\"> the TREE project is about much more than just a single truck<\/a>\u2014it&#8217;s about setting a new standard for sustainable forestry, adding that &#8220;support and enthusiasm from industry leaders and the general public, including Infrastructure Minister Andreas Carlson, underscore just how important this work is.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The breakthrough came just months after Wood Central reported that Swedish scientists had designed the world&#8217;s first unmanned machine for autonomous forestry operations\u2014<a href=\"https:\/\/woodcentral.com.au\/worlds-first-ai-harvest-machine-is-game-changer-for-forests\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">a major breakthrough in the push towards a fully automated forest management and production process.<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h6 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Facts and figures<\/h6>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>By running just one electric truck between Gimon\u00e4s and Obbola, SCA&nbsp;can reduce our carbon emissions by about 55,000 kg per year.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The new truck can run six turns per day&nbsp;Gimon\u00e4s wood terminal- Obbola paper mill, Monday-Friday 07:00-17:00<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Distance: 30 km round-trip<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Time: 75 minutes per trip&nbsp;(both loading and&nbsp;&nbsp;unloading)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The truck is loaded with an ABB charger of&nbsp;180 Kw at the Obbola paper mill.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Please Note:<\/strong> <em>The project is part of a national initiative in which leading Swedish players have joined forces to accelerate the transition to electrified emission-free heavy transport on our roads.
