{"id":23662,"date":"2025-02-15T18:59:52","date_gmt":"2025-02-15T08:59:52","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/woodcentral.com.au\/?p=23662"},"modified":"2025-02-15T18:59:55","modified_gmt":"2025-02-15T08:59:55","slug":"can-a-weak-aussie-dollar-help-australia-ride-out-trumps-tariffs","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/woodcentral.com.au\/can-a-weak-aussie-dollar-help-australia-ride-out-trumps-tariffs\/","title":{"rendered":"Can a Weak Aussie Dollar Help Australia &#8216;Ride Out&#8217; Trump&#8217;s Tariffs?"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Donald Trump has shaken the global supply chain of steel and aluminium to its foundations, slapping a 25% tariff on all US-bound imports &#8211; which he said will hit &#8220;everybody&#8221;, including long-term allies South Korea, Japan and Australia &#8211; amongst the top markets for steel and aluminium.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>&#8220;Steel. Any steel (and aluminium) coming into the United States is going to have a 25% tariff.&#8221;<\/p>\n<cite>President Trump told reporters aboard Air Force One on the way to the Superbowl. <\/cite><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>Already, the threat has seen more than AU $15 billion wiped from the Australian Stock Exchange in the 90 minutes after the proclamation &#8211; which exported more than AU $638 million worth of steel last year, with economist Stephen Innes warning that Asian markets were scrambling for their &#8220;trade war helmets&#8221; on Monday morning:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;Trump&#8217;s latest move isn&#8217;t merely another trade skirmish. (Photo Credit: Everett Collection Inc \/ Alamy Stock Photo)<br><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>The high-stakes gamble has already seen Trump threaten to put a 25% tariff on the US $3 billion worth of Canadian lumber that crosses the North American border every year (since delayed for 30 days), with David Littleproud &#8211; leader of Australia&#8217;s leading country party, the Nationals &#8211; warning that it was incumbent on the Albanese government to ensure that Australia was not tied up in future tariffs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;We&#8217;re a trading nation, and I can tell you that tariffs not even imposed on us, but imposed on other parts of the world still have inflationary impacts for us in what we consume,&#8221; he said. &#8220;It&#8217;s important that we encourage and use our place in the world to encourage all countries to adhere by (rules-based order of trade) because a tariff war will not benefit anybody, and Australia will not be immune from that.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h6 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Will the dollar save Australia from the wrath of Trump&#8217;s tariffs?<\/h6>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;It&#8217;s too early to tell what impact these new tariffs, if they ever actually come into effect, will do for the price and supply of framing, <a href=\"https:\/\/empirestl.com.au\/understanding-how-much-steel-windows-and-doors-cost-a-comprehensive-guide\/\">windows and doors<\/a>,&#8221; according to an Australian-based trader who spoke to Wood Central this morning on the condition of anonymity. &#8220;However, given how weak the Aussie dollar is right now, it&#8217;s possible that Australian imports will still be (relatively) competitive even with the new tariffs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<div class=\"youtube-embed\" data-video_id=\"IHF1gm-_Clg\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"A weak Australian dollar can \u2018tie into&#039; inflationary pressures\" width=\"696\" height=\"392\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/IHF1gm-_Clg?feature=oembed&#038;enablejsapi=1\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/div>\n<\/div><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">A weak Aussie dollar might be disastrous for consumer spending, but it could help insulate exporters against volatility in international markets. <\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>The Australian dollar is trading at 0.63 to the United States dollar &#8211; with a strong greenback, a weakening Chinese economy and sluggish domestic demand, making imports at home much more expensive but helping exports in global markets.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.9news.com.au\/finance\/why-is-the-australian-dollar-and-what-does-it-mean-for-interest-rates-and-travel\/41f70bfa-68c7-4c62-8f75-ea9bdc4d81e4#:~:text=A%20combination%20of%20the%20strong%20greenback%2C%20the%20impact,61.32%20US%20cents%20-%20almost%20a%20five-year%20low.\">According to Evan Lucas<\/a>, an economic futurist, the fortunes of the Aussie currency are being shaped by events in Washington and Beijing: &#8220;We&#8217;ve been playing up with two sides; the US threatening tariffs on China has pressured our biggest trading partner.
