{"id":24033,"date":"2025-02-25T15:52:10","date_gmt":"2025-02-25T05:52:10","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/woodcentral.com.au\/?p=24033"},"modified":"2025-02-25T18:37:33","modified_gmt":"2025-02-25T08:37:33","slug":"why-japans-culture-is-built-on-wood-not-stone-and-bricks","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/woodcentral.com.au\/why-japans-culture-is-built-on-wood-not-stone-and-bricks\/","title":{"rendered":"Why Japan&#8217;s Culture is Built on Wood, Not Stone and Bricks!"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>As the global construction industry grapples with the push to switch out high-carbon construction materials for timber, it could learn much from Japan &#8211; a civilisation that has been building timber buildings to withstand earthquakes and other natural disasters for centuries.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;The timber culture comes down to the fact that bricks weren&#8217;t introduced here until the 1860s (by the Germans),&#8221; said Graham Sayer, <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.japaneselumber.com\/\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">director of Japanese Lumber<\/a> &#8211; a native New Zealander with deep relationships with sawmills and merchants across the country. &#8220;So it&#8217;s not a civilisation built on bricks (or stone) like many European civilisations.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Home to some of the world&#8217;s oldest managed forests, Simon Love &#8211; &nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.japanesetimber.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">director of Japanese Timber Australia<\/a> &#8211; said the origins of sustainable forest management date back to the 17th century: &#8220;It all started with the 1725 reforms&#8230;and the only hiccup came at the end of the Second World War &#8211; during the post-war rebuild &#8211; but the system of forest management goes back 300 years, centuries before PEFC and FSC certification.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"691\" src=\"https:\/\/woodcentral.com.au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/02\/PB50DX-1024x691.jpg\" alt=\"Tatekawa in Honjo (Honjo Tatekawa), from the series Thirty six Views of Mount Fuji (Fugaku sanjurokkei).
