{"id":25760,"date":"2025-05-27T18:07:14","date_gmt":"2025-05-27T08:07:14","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/woodcentral.com.au\/?p=25760"},"modified":"2025-05-27T18:07:18","modified_gmt":"2025-05-27T08:07:18","slug":"new-eudr-system-ranks-190-countries-by-deforestation-risk","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/woodcentral.com.au\/new-eudr-system-ranks-190-countries-by-deforestation-risk\/","title":{"rendered":"New EUDR System Ranks 190 Countries by Deforestation Risk"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Products from Russia, Belarus, North Korea, and Myanmar are the only countries classified as having a &#8220;high risk of deforestation&#8221; <a href=\"https:\/\/green-forum.ec.europa.eu\/deforestation-regulation-implementation\/eudr-cooperation-and-partnerships\/country-classification-list_en\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">under the Europen Union&#8217;s new country classification list.<\/a> The classifications,<a href=\"https:\/\/green-forum.ec.europa.eu\/deforestation-regulation-implementation\/eudr-cooperation-and-partnerships_en\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"> published on Friday<\/a>, are a key part of the European Union Deforestation Regulation (EUDR) and<a href=\"https:\/\/environment.ec.europa.eu\/publications\/commission-implementing-regulation-laying-down-rules-application-deforestation-regulation_en\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"> follow the approval of a new and improved &#8216;Global Benchmarking System&#8217; on Wednesday.<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/green-forum.ec.europa.eu\/deforestation-regulation-implementation\/eudr-cooperation-and-partnerships_en\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">According to the European Commission<\/a>, &#8220;the risk classification defines the extent of compliance checks that Member States&#8217; competent authorities foresee among operators sourcing from different countries &#8211; for example, 1% for &#8216;low risk&#8217;, 3% for &#8216;standard risk&#8217; and 9% for &#8216;high risk&#8217;.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;In effect, this means that 1-out-of-every-100 forest products will be inspected from a low-risk country, 3-out-of-every 100 from a standard risk and 9-out-of-every 100 products from a high-risk country,&#8221; according to an official with an understanding of the new rules, who spoke to Wood Central on the condition of anonymity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-buttons is-layout-flex wp-block-buttons-is-layout-flex\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-button is-style-outline is-style-outline--1\"><a class=\"wp-block-button__link wp-element-button\" href=\"https:\/\/ec.europa.eu\/newsroom\/env\/items\/884631\/\">Click here to view the classifications.<\/a><\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<h6 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-where-does-your-country-rank-in-terms-of-deforestation-risk\">Where does your country rank in terms of deforestation risk?<\/h6>\n\n\n\n<p>Of the 190+ countries ranked, <strong>Wood Central can reveal that 49 are now considered &#8216;standard risk&#8217;<\/strong>, including Brazil (South America&#8217;s largest exporter of forest products), Mexico, Pakistan, the Democratic Republic of the Democratic Republic of the Congo, and Cameroon (Africa&#8217;s two largest forest exporters).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1620\" height=\"1080\" src=\"https:\/\/woodcentral.com.au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/06\/CR8NA4-2.jpg\" alt=\"Tree trunks for loading in the logport of Logpont Timbers Rimbunan Hijau (PNG) Limitid in Garim, Madang, Papua Neuguinea. The classifications are based on data from the Global Forest Resources Assessment conducted by the Food and Agriculture Organisation of the United Nations.
