{"id":27623,"date":"2025-08-07T16:06:38","date_gmt":"2025-08-07T06:06:38","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/woodcentral.com.au\/?p=27623"},"modified":"2025-08-07T16:53:43","modified_gmt":"2025-08-07T06:53:43","slug":"queenslands-new-plan-to-supply-more-timber-for-1-million-houses","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/woodcentral.com.au\/queenslands-new-plan-to-supply-more-timber-for-1-million-houses\/","title":{"rendered":"Queensland&#8217;s New Plan to Supply More Timber for 1 Million Houses"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>The Queensland Government has unveiled its Future Timber Plan (QFTP), a long-term blueprint designed to \u2018future-proof\u2019 the timber supply needed to build one million homes by 2044. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dpi.qld.gov.au\/business-priorities\/forestry\/qld-future-timber-plan\">Now open for public consultation<\/a>, Wood Central can reveal that the new plan outlines five key priorities to guide the development of a sustainable, competitive, and innovative forestry and timber industry.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h6 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-the-five-priorities-are\">The five priorities are:<\/h6>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Securing sustainable timber supply for housing, construction, infrastructure, and other industries<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Establishing supply chain competitiveness on an international scale<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Developing better regulations that the community sees benefits in<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Building and retaining a viable fit-for-purpose workforce in rural and regional economies<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Modernising and innovating the Queensland forestry and timber industry through research, development and extension<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Wood Central understands these priorities will be delivered through rolling five-year action plans and will form a central component of the Government&#8217;s broader Primary Industries Prosper 2050 strategy, which aims to grow primary production output to $30 billion by 2030.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-buttons is-layout-flex wp-block-buttons-is-layout-flex\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-button is-style-outline is-style-outline--1\"><a class=\"wp-block-button__link wp-element-button\" href=\"https:\/\/dpi.engagementhub.com.au\/qld-future-timber-plan\">Click here to read the draft plan<\/a><\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>According to Tony Perrett, Queensland\u2019s Minister for Primary Industries, the plan will allow the industry to reset and address long-standing supply challenges. \u201cThis plan is about securing a reliable and sustainable timber supply to meet Queensland\u2019s growing housing, construction, and infrastructure needs, all while protecting jobs and building regional economies,\u201d he said. \u201cSuccessive Labor governments have failed Queenslanders and caused shortfalls in timber supply. This is a once-in-a-generation opportunity to shape the future of Queensland&#8217;s forestry and timber industries.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h6 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-plan-sparks-fierce-criticism-from-environmental-groups\">Plan sparks fierce criticism from environmental groups.<\/h6>\n\n\n\n<p> Queensland&#8217;s Conservation Council yesterday labelled it &#8220;tunnel vision and dangerous,&#8221; <a href=\"https:\/\/www.queenslandconservation.org.au\/conservationists_slam_draft_timber_plan\">claiming the strategy prioritises native forest logging at the expense of endangered greater gliders and other forest-dependent threatened species.<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>According to Mick Stephens, CEO of Timber Queensland, the draft plan provides clear recognition of the vital contribution this industry makes to the state economy as well as the social and environmental benefits from sustainably managed forests. &#8220;For too long, this sector has been neglected at the expense of rural and regional jobs, green building outcomes and housing affordability,\u201d Stephens said. &#8220;The Government listened to our call at the last election for a comprehensive plan to remove productivity barriers and has put the forest and timber industry back at the forefront of strategic economic development.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe support the plan&#8217;s key focus areas of securing future supply, delivering an internationally competitive supply chain, better regulation, workforce development and greater innovation and extension.
