{"id":31079,"date":"2025-12-12T15:10:45","date_gmt":"2025-12-12T05:10:45","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/woodcentral.com.au\/?p=31079"},"modified":"2025-12-15T22:45:35","modified_gmt":"2025-12-15T12:45:35","slug":"burning-the-grand-ring-japan-to-torch-worlds-largest-timber-structure","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/woodcentral.com.au\/burning-the-grand-ring-japan-to-torch-worlds-largest-timber-structure\/","title":{"rendered":"Burning the Grand Ring: Japan to Torch World\u2019s Largest Timber Structure?"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Up to 70% of the timber used in Osaka&#8217;s Grand Ring \u2014 the world\u2019s largest architecturally designed wooden structure \u2014 will be turned into firewood, according to its architect Sou Fujimoto. <a href=\"https:\/\/woodcentral.com.au\/world-expos-grand-ring-to-be-recycled-into-quake-proof-housing\/\">That is despite Wood Central previously reporting that the vast majority of recycled timber would be used to build quake\u2011proof disaster housing.<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The two\u2011kilometre\u2011long ring wrapped around the Expo 2025 Osaka site from April to October. Now, demolition is underway, with only a 200\u2011metre stretch slated for preservation as a long-term monument to the site.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/woodcentral.com.au\/expos-record-breaking-timber-ring-is-built-to-withstand-quakes\/\">Earlier this year<\/a>, Wood Central revealed Fujimoto\u2019s belief that the project was \u201ca symbol of our times,\u201d rooted in Japan\u2019s centuries\u2011old wooden\u2011building tradition. \u201cHowever, we haven\u2019t fully harnessed these natural materials to their greatest potential. (Photo Credit: Japan Association for the 2025 World Exposition)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Around 70% of the timber used in the Ring was made of Japanese cedar and hinoki, while the remainder included stronger European red cedar and reinforced steel. Consequently, the structure was engineered to withstand major earthquakes. Inside, thousands of components were joined using Nuki joints \u2014 a traditional Japanese method requiring no nails or screws. (Photo Credit: Andrew Dunn)<br><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>However, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dezeen.com\/2025\/12\/11\/grand-ring-osaka-expo-2025-burned-fuel\/\">speaking exclusively to Dezeen overnight<\/a>, Fujimoto said he now expects most of the timber to be burned. \u201cUnfortunately, now, almost a decision by the political people [has been made about] keeping only 10%, 200 metres, and then all the rest will be demolished,\u201d he said, before adding that \u201cmaybe 20% could be carefully dismantled and then transported to other places for a second life.\u201d But he warned that \u201c70%, at least as far as I\u2019ve heard, they will just demolish and then make it chips for the fuel.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Expo and Osaka authorities have not confirmed the final plan for the dismantled timber. Nevertheless, Fujimoto\u2019s studio is not involved in the decision\u2011making.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Before the expo closed, The Japan Times quoted an official from Suzu saying some wood would be donated for public housing after the 2024 earthquake and floods. Footage courtesy of GreatBigBuilds.<\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Its Sustainability Action Plan is committed only to reusing materials \u201cas much as possible.\u201d Yet Fujimoto has slammed the burning plan as \u201cthe worst thing to do.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cJapanese political people think this is one of the ways to reuse it, but I don\u2019t think it is the way you reuse it,\u201d he said. \u201cBut at least, so far in Japan, the thinking on sustainability is a little behind global standards.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s a bit [of a] pity,\u201d he added. \u201cThere are still many opinions about how we can keep it or something, maybe a discussion is happening, but a major political decision has been made, and now the process is going on to dismantle.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Fujimoto said he hoped the structure\u2019s adaptability would convince authorities to preserve it. \u201cI was hoping, I was expecting, from the very beginning that if the expo was very successful and if people really love it, then this Grand Ring could stay longer, like the Eiffel Tower or like some other few examples of the expo building which is staying longer,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cAnd that was my attitude from the beginning,\u201d he added. \u201cOf course, as [a] professional architect, I was following the request from the client, but at the same time I was expecting to go beyond that.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>With proper maintenance, Fujimoto believes the structure could have lasted \u201cmore than 50 or 100 years.\u201d However, he warned that \u201cwe need some kind of maintenance or reinforcement, and so it will cost.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cAnd then of course it is exposed wood, so we need a kind of maintenance cost yearly, so that is always the difficulty,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>To learn more about the Grand Ring, which in March was awarded as the world record as the world\u2019s largest wooden architectural structure by the Gusiness Book of Records,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/woodcentral.com.au\/record-broken-expos-grand-ring-is-worlds-largest-timber-structure\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">click here for Wood Central\u2019s special feature.<\/a>\u00a0And to learn why engineers are now developing new shock absorbers that will help buildings bounce back faster from quakes,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/woodcentral.com.au\/bouncing-back-from-quakes-new-tech-a-lifesaver-for-timber-buildings\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">click here for Wood Central\u2019s special feature.<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Up to 70% of the timber used in Osaka&#8217;s Grand Ring \u2014 the world\u2019s largest architecturally designed wooden structure \u2014 will be turned into firewood, according to its architect Sou Fujimoto.
