{"id":32720,"date":"2026-02-18T00:27:11","date_gmt":"2026-02-17T14:27:11","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/woodcentral.com.au\/?p=32720"},"modified":"2026-02-18T00:27:13","modified_gmt":"2026-02-17T14:27:13","slug":"sumitomo-forestry-eyes-california-in-4-5b-deal-for-tri-pointe-homes","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/woodcentral.com.au\/sumitomo-forestry-eyes-california-in-4-5b-deal-for-tri-pointe-homes\/","title":{"rendered":"Sumitomo Forestry Eyes California in $4.5B Deal for Tri Pointe Homes"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Sumitomo Forestry is rapidly expanding its interests in the US housing market after agreeing to acquire Tri Pointe Homes in a US$ 4.5 billion deal that will create the fifth\u2011largest homebuilder in the United States. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Wood Central understands that the latest acquisition strengthens its position in the US single\u2011family housing market \u2014 now responsible for 60 per cent of its recurring income in the United States \u2014 while giving it long\u2011sought access to California and Nevada after earlier expansions in Texas and the southeast.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And with Japan facing a glut of vacant single\u2011family homes, the move marks a major step toward Sumitomo Forestry&#8217;s goal of supplying 23,000 US homes annually by 2030, according to Toshio Mitsuyoshi, CEO and President of Sumitomo Forestry, the parent company that controls Sumitomo&#8217;s global interests.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cTri Pointe Homes shares our focus on quality, customer experience and a culture that empowers local operating teams,\u201d Mitsuyoshi said. \u201cThrough the acquisition, we expect to further enhance our profitability by leveraging the complementary strengths of Tri Pointe Homes and each of the five homebuilders within our group.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-rich is-provider-twitter wp-block-embed-twitter\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\"><p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Japan&#39;s housing starts continue to slide despite an uptick in post-and-beam construction. The NYSE\u2011listed builder is known for its \u201cmove\u2011up\u201d product, with an average selling price of $680,000, one of the highest in the US public homebuilding sector.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Under the deal, shareholders will receive $47 per share in cash, a 42 per cent premium to the 90\u2011day VWAP and above the company\u2019s all\u2011time closing high. The boards of both companies have unanimously approved the merger, with closing expected in Q2 2026, pending shareholder and regulatory approval.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cPartnering with Sumitomo Forestry is a natural evolution in Tri Pointe Homes\u2019 growth and reflects the strengths of our differentiated business strategy, premium brand and design\u2011driven approach,\u201d said CEO Doug Bauer. \u201cThis transaction delivers compelling cash value for our stockholders while accelerating our long\u2011term growth strategy as an independent brand within a scaled, multi\u2011faceted platform.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Crucially, the deal positions Sumitomo Forestry ahead of rival Sekisui House, which bought MDC Holdings for $4.95 billion in 2024.
