{"id":32808,"date":"2026-02-20T13:30:46","date_gmt":"2026-02-20T03:30:46","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/woodcentral.com.au\/?p=32808"},"modified":"2026-02-20T13:35:41","modified_gmt":"2026-02-20T03:35:41","slug":"victorias-timber-towns-urge-allan-to-act-swiftly-on-swifts-creek-shutdown","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/woodcentral.com.au\/victorias-timber-towns-urge-allan-to-act-swiftly-on-swifts-creek-shutdown\/","title":{"rendered":"Victoria\u2019s Timber Towns Urge Allan to Act Swiftly on Swifts Creek Shutdown"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Victoria\u2019s Timber Towns are urging Jacinta Allen and the Victorian government to act now and support communities still impacted by its 2024 swift decision to end native forestry, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.abc.net.au\/news\/2026-02-10\/swifts-creek-future-as-logging-industry-closes\/105904130\">as the East Gippsland community continue to mourn the loss of the historic Swifts Creek sawmill and looks to reinvent itself.<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThis mill closure is the glaring outcome of an ad-hoc decision by the government that has lasting impacts across communities at so many levels,\u201d a<a href=\"https:\/\/timbertownsvictoria.com.au\/\">ccording to Karen Stephens, President of Timber Towns Victoria, which represents municipalities in the state\u2019s north, east and west.<\/a> \u201cThe Swift Creek community need genuine government support that has dependable outcomes.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Stephens, herself a councillor and mayor of the Glenelg Shire in the state&#8217;s southwest, said the closure highlights the ongoing challenges local communities face as they work to find a future for themselves post native forestry.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-pullquote\"><blockquote><p>\u201cThe consequences of the government decision are being felt by every household, business and person within the community.\u201d <\/p><cite>Karen Stephens, President of Timber Towns Victoria, on spoke of the flow on effects from the decision to cease native forestry in January 2024.<\/cite><\/blockquote><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Established by the Ezard family in the immediate aftermath of the 1939 Black Friday bushfires, the sawmill operated for decades as a hardwood sawmill, supplying structural timber, pallets, and general hardwood products from mountain ash, alpine ash, silvertop ash, and messmate.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Speaking to The Weekly Times last month, long\u2011time community advocate Stephen Richardson said the mill\u2019s closure has left the Swifts Creek community facing uncertainty: \u201cSwifts Creek is in real trouble,\u201d Richardson warned. \u201cThe promise to put all those timber jobs somewhere else locally hasn\u2019t been kept.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<div class=\"youtube-embed\" data-video_id=\"LLBZ44mdufo\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Swifts Creek Timber Mill\" width=\"696\" height=\"392\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/LLBZ44mdufo?feature=oembed&#038;enablejsapi=1\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/div>\n<\/div><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\"><em>Earlier this month, Tom McIntosh &#8211; Member for Eastern Victoria &#8211; spoke about the Swift&#8217;s Creek sawmill closure in the Victorian Upper House. Footage courtesy of Tom McIntosh.<\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/woodcentral.com.au\/resource-drain-leaves-victoria-far-more-exposed-to-bushfire-than-black-summer\/\">Last month<\/a>, Wood Central reported that Victorian communities, like Swifts Creek, that are at high risk of fire are far less prepared than they were during the Black Summer fires, with the decision to cease native forestry in 2023 contributing to a talent and resource drain across the state\u2019s timber towns.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cOne of the consequences of ending native forest harvesting has been the loss of skilled and experienced operators,\u201d according to Steve Dobbyns, executive officer for Forest and Wood Communities Australia. \u201cWe are now seeing that in the bushfire crisis, where multiple pieces of heavy plant \u2014 including dozers and harvesting machines \u2014 are currently stood down because there are not enough qualified people to operate them. (Photo credit: Supplied to Wood Central)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>It comes as leaders in East Gippsland called on the Allen government to reinstate key roles cut from the Department of Energy, Environment and Climate Action (DEECA) and Parks Victoria, who, between them, are now responsible for managing the state\u2019s parks and forests in Cann River, Orbost, Bairnsdale, Swifts Creek and Nowa Nowa.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Speaking about the cuts, Melina Bath, Victoria\u2019s Opposition spokeswoman for Public Land, said restoring the jobs was essential to meeting fuel-reduction targets. \u201cTo make sure we are doing the right amount of fuel\u2011reduction burning, we need the best expertise,\u201d she said. \u201cWe don\u2019t want to be hamstrung by metropolitan Melbourne decision-making that is highly ignorant of the reality of fuel loads.
