The reality is that it could be much higher.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Unfortunately, this is neither new or all that surprising. &nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In late November 2022, <a href=\"https:\/\/woodcentral.com.au\/record-shipments-of-russian-timber-arrive-via-china-to-ease-timber-squeeze-industry-claims\/\">we broke a story<\/a> about the surge of Russian and Belarus timber entering the Australian market via China. (Photo credit: The Fifth Estate).<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>At the time, Russian and Belarus timber was being imported to help alleviate the timber shortage caused by the Covid 19, bushfire, and the increased demand for wood. Logging in Siberia.<br><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p>While the shortage of timber has since corrected itself, the flow of timber under questionable \u2018country-of-origin\u2019 documentation continues to flood Australia\u2019s shipping ports, finding its way to housing and construction projects.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h6 class=\"wp-block-heading\">So, what can be done to reduce risk of illegal timber entering supply chains?<\/h6>\n\n\n\n<p>Australia has relatively soft compliance action on Russian laundered wood compared to many other countries including the European Union and the United Kingdom.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In March 2022, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/government\/news\/new-sanctions-ban-every-item-russia-is-using-on-the-battlefield\">United Kingdom<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.europarl.europa.eu\/doceo\/document\/P-9-2022-000973_EN.html\">European Union <\/a>both banned the outright import of all Russian timber &#8211; for the duration of the war &#8211; and there is a strong argument that the Australian Government should follow suit.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The current Australian Illegal Logging Prohibition Act (2012) only assesses that timber is legal in the country of origin &#8211; <a href=\"http:\/\/llegal Logging Prohibition Act\">however as of December 2022 the legislation is subject to a parliamentary review.<\/a> It must change!<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-large is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/woodcentral.com.au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/03\/IMG-7842-1024x576.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-3601\" width=\"574\" height=\"322\" srcset=\"https:\/\/woodcentral.com.au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/03\/IMG-7842-1024x576.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/woodcentral.com.au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/03\/IMG-7842-600x338.jpg 600w, https:\/\/woodcentral.com.au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/03\/IMG-7842-300x169.jpg 300w, https:\/\/woodcentral.com.au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/03\/IMG-7842-768x432.jpg 768w, https:\/\/woodcentral.com.au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/03\/IMG-7842-696x392.jpg 696w, https:\/\/woodcentral.com.au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/03\/IMG-7842-1068x601.jpg 1068w, https:\/\/woodcentral.com.au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/03\/IMG-7842-747x420.jpg 747w, https:\/\/woodcentral.com.au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/03\/IMG-7842.jpg 1280w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 574px) 100vw, 574px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Joint CEO&#8217;s of Austral Plywood&#8217;s Scott Matthews and Stuart Matthews at their plywood facility in Brisbane, Australia. (Photo credit: The Australian)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p>By strengthening the compliance and enforcement on Russian and Belarusian wood, Australia will introduce enforcement that not only aligns with it&#8217;s key trading partners but is also in step with societal expectations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h6 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Forest Certification &#8211; false and misleading claims<\/h6>\n\n\n\n<p>Another consideration is forest certification &#8211; and the importance of preventing false and misleading claims on timber that has been imported under falsified documentation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>At the same time that the European Union and United Kingdom introduced sweeping sanctions, <a href=\"https:\/\/fsc.org\/en\/newscentre\/no-fsc-material-from-russia-and-belarus-until-the-invasion-ends\">FSC <\/a>and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pefc.org\/conflict-timber-faq\">PEFC <\/a>both suspended certification on Russian and Belarus timber, suspensions that have been extended and no longer recognised under either PEFC or FSC certification schemes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>While there have been isolated examples of false FSC and PEFC labels being used on Russian and Belarus timber, falsified claims can be easily identified, much like a poorly forged signature.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The trick is to ask for a FSC or PEFC-claim on company documentation rather than just accept a dodgy FSC or PEFC label on the wrapping.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It really is that simple:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p> \u2018X% PEFC Certified\u2019 or \u2018X% FSC Certified\u2019 <\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>Together, we have an obligation to do the right thing and stop illegal imports once and for all.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The time to act is now!<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Attention is once again drawn to Russia and Belarus timber being sold under falsified \u2018country-of-origin\u2019 documentation.
