Footage courtesy of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/@UNFAO\">@UNFAO<\/a>.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h6 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Peak Australian Forest Association calls for more trees to be planted.<\/h6>\n\n\n\n<p>On this special day, the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.aufpa.com.au\">Australian Forest Products Association <\/a>is calling on all policy and political decision makers to better recognise the potential forest industries provide for the nation to meet its emission reduction targets and fight climate change.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe 2023 theme is promoting the endless benefits forests provide in improving health globally,\u201d CEO Joel Fitzgibbon said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cOne of the biggest threats to health is climate change which is where better political and policy recognition of sustainable forest industries can make a difference,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cAustralia needs climate solutions to meet emission reduction targets and forest industries should be a key part of the mix. Growing more timber trees in plantations and native forests locks up carbon while increasing our future local supply of sustainable timber and wood fibre. This also enhances Australia\u2019s sovereign capability while creating sustainable jobs for thousands of people, many in rural and regional areas.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Mr Fitzgibbon said global demand for wood fibre was forecast to grow exponentially by the middle of the century \u2026 \u201cso the opportunities for Australia to make an even larger climate mitigation contribution through timber trees, while supplying the world with sustainable timber and wood fibre products is huge.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>AFPA calls on all policy and political decision makers to better recognise Australia\u2019s forest industries\u2019 potential to fight climate change and meet emission reduction targets.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h6 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Forestry is the key to fight climate change, says IPCC.<\/h6>\n\n\n\n<p>According to the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), sustainable forestry and forest products are crucial in the fight against climate change. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-rich is-provider-embed-handler wp-block-embed-embed-handler wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<div class=\"youtube-embed\" data-video_id=\"G96U3PQzlRc\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"The Urban Heat Island effect is defined by climate differences between rural and urban areas.\" width=\"696\" height=\"392\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/G96U3PQzlRc?feature=oembed&#038;enablejsapi=1\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/div>\n<\/div><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\"><a href=\"https:\/\/woodcentral.com.au\/building-a-sustainable-future-with-timber-the-role-of-the-global-changemakers\/\">Wood Central&#8217;s Southeast Asia Reporter interviewed Associate Professor Winston Chow<\/a>, a contributor to the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) who spoke out on the \u201ccooling qualities\u201d of timber, the importance of \u201cembodied carbon\u201d and advocated the greater use of timber in buildings. Footage courtesy of&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/@protiotypedesignscience6912\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">@protiotypedesignscience6912<\/a><br><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ipcc.ch\/report\/sixth-assessment-report-cycle\/\">IPCC&#8217;s AR6 Synthesis Report<\/a> mentions agroforestry, diversified agriculture, improved forest management, and sustainable forest products as adaptation options to address climate change. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Nathan Paine, CEO of the South Australian Forest Products Association, stated that &#8220;our sustainably grown and managed forests have the potential to lead the nation, and the world, to combat climate change and decarbonize our economy.&#8221; With global demand for timber and wood-fibre increasing, there is an opportunity for the forestry industry to help reduce emissions and lead the world.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h6 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Forestry Australia is investing in the science of forestry.<\/h6>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.forestry.org.au\">Forestry Australia<\/a> has gone further, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.forestry.org.au\/expanding-science-policy-activities-at-forestry-australia\/\">investing in a forest science policy program<\/a>, a new approach to resourcing these activities to improve its advocacy and communication of evidence-based forest management.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>CEO Jacquie Martin says that committing resources to the new program will assist the organisation to promote and advocate science-based forest management; raise Forestry Australia\u2019s profile; and improve outcomes for, and understanding of, science-based forestry.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Ms Martin said the strategic investment in the program was a response to members\u2019 desire to improve advocacy and communication to the public and policy makers on science-based forest management and complement the work being undertaken by the advocacy committee, the board and national office.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h6 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What is World Forestry Day?<\/h6>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.msn.com\/en-in\/entertainment\/news\/international-day-of-forests-2023-theme-history-and-significance\/ar-AA18QIut\">The concept of having a World Forestry Day originated at the 23rd General Assembly of the European Confederation of Agriculture in 1971.<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Later that year, the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organisation gave support to the idea believing the event would contribute a great deal to public awareness of the importance of forests and agreed that it should be observed every year around the world.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>March 21, the autumnal equinox in the southern hemisphere and the vernal equinox in the northern hemisphere, was chosen as the day to celebrate information about the three key facets of forestry \u2013 protection, production and recreation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h6 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Healthy forests for healthy people<\/h6>\n\n\n\n<p>As we celebrate International Day of Forests, it&#8217;s crucial to remind ourselves of the immense benefits that these green spaces provide to our well-being, says the Forest Stewardship Council in an International Day of Forests message.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>From providing clean air, water, and soil, to food sources and regulating the water cycle and temperatures and filtering pollutants, forests are critical for our survival. Furthermore, forests are habitats for a diverse array of plant and animal species, some of which possess medicinal properties that can be utilised to address various health conditions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But it&#8217;s not just physical health that forests impact, says<a href=\"http:\/\/www.fsc.org\"> FSC International.<\/a> Studies have shown that spending time in nature and among trees can profoundly impact our mental health, reducing stress and anxiety and improving overall well-being.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As we become increasingly aware of the significance of forests for human health, it&#8217;s evident that it\u2019s essential to prioritise their preservation and sustainable management.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>FSC is a sustainable forest management solution that operates as an international non-profit organisation backed by renowned NGOs and businesses worldwide.<a href=\"http:\/\/au.fsc.org\"> Its impact in Australia and New Zealand is substantial<\/a>, with more than 2.5 million ha of forests certified under FSC\u2019s standards for responsible forestry.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.wwf.org.au\/\">WWF Australia<\/a>, a member of <a href=\"http:\/\/au.fsc.org\">FSC ANZ<\/a>, has been actively promoting the importance of trees and forests in maintaining our health and well-being through its We All Need Trees campaign.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-rich is-provider-embed-handler wp-block-embed-embed-handler wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<div class=\"youtube-embed\" data-video_id=\"sznbmjvdlkU\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Towards Two Billion Trees | WWF-Australia\" width=\"696\" height=\"392\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/sznbmjvdlkU?feature=oembed&#038;enablejsapi=1\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/div>\n<\/div><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">The WWF Toward Two Billion Trees campaign.
