Footage courtesy of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/@abcnewsaustralia\">@abcnewsaustralia<\/a><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Victorian Premier Daniel Andrews has concerns about the conduct of Porter Davis, particularly over allegations of baiting customers and leaving them without insurance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/subbiesunited.com.au\/grant-thornton-creates-a-shortlist-of-15-builders-to-help-finish-porter-davis-homes\/\">Reported in the Weekend Australian<\/a>, Grant Thornton, the appointed liquidator, has shortlisted 15 builders capable of meeting the unfinished houses.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h6 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Dire outlook for Australian Housing<\/h6>\n\n\n\n<p>Last week, <a href=\"https:\/\/woodcentral.com.au\/aussie-housing-data-demand-falls-supply-affordability-issues-concerns-over-long-term-timber-supply\/\">Wood Central analysed data provided in the latest ABS\u2019s \u2018Building Activity Report\u2019<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>By the numbers, commencement or \u2018ground breaks\u2019 are expected to fall as builders and home buyers are both impacted by the affordability crunch. &nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.macrobusiness.com.au\/2023\/03\/thousands-of-aussie-home-builders-collapse\/\">This financial year more than 1300 construction companies<\/a> have already gone into liquidation, receivership, or administration &#8211; a number that by February 2023 already surpassed the total number for 2021\/22.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In an AFR interview last month, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.afr.com\/property\/commercial\/building-failures-to-overtake-last-year-s-total-with-4-months-to-go-20230228-p5co4h\">Brad Walters<\/a> head of product and ratings services at data company Equifax warned that more companies in the sector are likely to collapse.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIn construction, they\u2019ll continue to climb, because of the pressure the sector is under.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cFor another six to 12 months, it\u2019s going to continue to be a tough environment in the construction industry\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/ftmanews.com\/about-us\/\">The Frame and Truss Manufacturing Association (FTMA) <\/a>is the national association representing the Australian timber frame and truss manufacturing association.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"709\" height=\"519\" src=\"https:\/\/woodcentral.com.au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/04\/mcri-1.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-4826\" srcset=\"https:\/\/woodcentral.com.au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/04\/mcri-1.png 709w, https:\/\/woodcentral.com.au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/04\/mcri-1-600x439.png 600w, https:\/\/woodcentral.com.au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/04\/mcri-1-300x220.png 300w, https:\/\/woodcentral.com.au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/04\/mcri-1-696x509.png 696w, https:\/\/woodcentral.com.au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/04\/mcri-1-574x420.png 574w, https:\/\/woodcentral.com.au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/04\/mcri-1-80x60.png 80w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 709px) 100vw, 709px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/ftmanews.com\/monthly-credit-risk-insights-by-alares-2\/\">According to a March 30 credit risk report<\/a>, provided by Alares to FTMA members, insolvencies are at their highest levels since 2019 with the frame and truss sector on high alert.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h6 class=\"wp-block-heading\">HIA calls for changes to energy-efficiency standards in the National Construction Code<\/h6>\n\n\n\n<p>Leading the charge, the Housing Industry Association is urging the deferral of major changes stipulating how Victorian homes will be constructed under the National Construction Code.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-rich is-provider-embed-handler wp-block-embed-embed-handler wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<div class=\"youtube-embed\" data-video_id=\"ZaEWIWApZO0\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Australian housing risks a &#039;wave of defaults&#039; | ABC News\" width=\"696\" height=\"392\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/ZaEWIWApZO0?feature=oembed&#038;enablejsapi=1\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/div>\n<\/div><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">The discussion comes amidst an uncertain housing market. Footage courtesy of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/@nathers3774\">@nathers3774<\/a><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>The changes, which come into effect from October 1st, 2023, include a Whole of Home energy use budget that includes fixed appliances such as heating and cooling, hot water and lighting.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.realestate.com.au\/news\/proposed-shift-from-six-to-seven-stars-sparks-debate\/\">The changes have sparked debate<\/a> with the CEO of the Green Building Council of Australia, Davina Rooney, supporting the adoption of higher energy efficiency standards.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe GBCA welcomes improvements to energy standards that will result in more comfortable homes that are cheaper to run,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe residential sector accounts for 57% of emissions from buildings in Australia.&#8221; <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Rooney said that the IPCC report, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.afr.com\/property\/commercial\/architects-lay-down-challenge-for-carbon-neutral-building-20210927-p58v7w\">which has strongly supported the use of timber in construction<\/a>, has called for urgent action across the economy, with residential energy efficiency a key part of that challenge.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.eec.org.au\/\">Energy Efficiency Council (EEC) <\/a>argues homes can be built cost-effectively to seven stars, largely through better design and orientation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-rich is-provider-embed-handler wp-block-embed-embed-handler wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<div class=\"youtube-embed\" data-video_id=\"zM8WmC18Pn0\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"It&#039;s time to raise Australia&#039;s energy efficiency standards \\ Climate Council\" width=\"696\" height=\"392\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/zM8WmC18Pn0?feature=oembed&#038;enablejsapi=1\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/div>\n<\/div><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">The Australian Climate Council has also supported the push for greater energy-efficiency standards in residential housing. Footage courtesy of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/@ClimatecouncilOrgAu\">@ClimatecouncilOrgAu<\/a><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>While Victorian builders, like others across the country, are under strain, they&#8217;ve been given ample notice and support to adjust, EEC head of market transformation Rob Murray-Leach said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cBuilders could make strides towards seven stars if they considered a home&#8217;s positioning on a block and which way windows faced,\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/au.news.yahoo.com\/vic-building-industry-lobbies-government-032023958.html\">he said.<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;In a way, seven stars is just asking builders to think properly about design and orientation.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h6 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Victorian builders push for overhaul to industry rules<\/h6>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nds.org.au\/news\/royal-commission-considers-evidence-from-people-with-disability-who-have-experienced-homelessness#:~:text=In%20his%20opening%20address%2C%20the%20Honorable%20Ronald%20Sackville,system%2C%20and%20the%20experiences%20of%20First%20Nations%20peoples.\">The Royal Commission on People with Disability identified a lack of accessible housing as a significant issue<\/a>.
