{"id":6524,"date":"2023-05-28T07:07:46","date_gmt":"2023-05-28T07:07:46","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/woodcentral.com.au\/?p=6524"},"modified":"2024-12-23T18:01:48","modified_gmt":"2024-12-23T08:01:48","slug":"bluescope-is-looking-to-biochar-tech-to-future-proof-steel","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/woodcentral.com.au\/bluescope-is-looking-to-biochar-tech-to-future-proof-steel\/","title":{"rendered":"BlueScope is Looking to Biochar Tech to \u2018Future-Proof\u2019 Steel"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>The NSW government has approved BlueScope&#8217;s Port Kembla coal terminal to undergo a $182-million upgrade, allowing the steelmaker to import coal from Queensland.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.abc.net.au\/news\/2023-05-27\/bluescope-bolsters-port-kembla-coal-import-capability\/102398412\">According to the ABC<\/a>, NSW Planning Minister Paul Scully said the project is now a declared Critical State Significant Infrastructure, which allows improvements of three berths at the terminal to be kick-started.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.abc.net.au\/news\/2022-08-23\/south32-scraps-dendrobium-coal-mine-extension-plans-nsw\/101360104\">As the region&#8217;s Dendrobium Mine winds down<\/a>, BlueScope&nbsp;needs to make other plans, says&nbsp;David Scott, the steelmaker&#8217;s general manager of Manufacturing for Australian Steel.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>The new berths will bring in lower-emission steelmaking technology, including biochar.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.abc.net.au\/news\/rural\/2022-01-13\/biochar-beneficial-but-not-only-answer-to-climate-problems\/100741672\">Biochar technology<\/a> uses biomass, such as timber waste, as a substitute for pulverised coal, which reduces carbon emissions. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The process involves taking trees that have already been felled and stacked. These trees are then placed into a machine called a pyrolysis unit, which is the size of a shipping container.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The unit superheats the timber, breaking it down in a high-heat, oxygen-free environment. Once this process is completed, the waste from pyrolysis is classified as &#8216;carbon-reducing material.&#8217;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h6 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Research shows that pulverized biochar\/coal can successfully bind<\/h6>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.argusmedia.com\/en\/news\/2245341-australias-bluescope-steel-seeks-alternatives-to-coal?amp=1\">In August 2021<\/a>, BlueScope announced plans to replace its reline and blast furnace at the Port Kemba coal terminal. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bluescope.com\/bluescope-news\/2021\/10\/bluescope-and-rio-tinto-sign-mou-for-low-emissions-steelmaking-at-pksw\/\">In October 2021<\/a>, BlueScope and Rio Tinto signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) to research and design low-emission processes and technologies for its steel value chain.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/arena.gov.au\/news\/investigating-low-emissions-steel-production-at-port-kembla\/\">By mid-2022, BlueScope received funding from the Australian Renewable Energy Agency (ARENA)<\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/www.uow.edu.au\/media\/2022\/partnership-to-explore-low-emissions-steel-production-technologies-at-port-kembla.php\"> <\/a>to use charcoal produced from biochar to transition from traditional steelmaking to \u2018green steel production\u2019 as part of a commitment to net-zero emissions by 2050.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"576\" src=\"https:\/\/woodcentral.com.au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/port-kembla-1024x576.webp\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-6528\" srcset=\"https:\/\/woodcentral.com.au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/port-kembla-1024x576.webp 1024w, https:\/\/woodcentral.com.au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/port-kembla-600x338.webp 600w, https:\/\/woodcentral.com.au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/port-kembla-300x169.webp 300w, https:\/\/woodcentral.com.au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/port-kembla-768x432.webp 768w, https:\/\/woodcentral.com.au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/port-kembla-696x392.webp 696w, https:\/\/woodcentral.com.au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/port-kembla-1068x601.webp 1068w, https:\/\/woodcentral.com.au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/port-kembla-747x420.webp 747w, https:\/\/woodcentral.com.au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/port-kembla.webp 1200w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">BlueScope partnered with the University of Wollongong (WOW) and the Australian Energy Agency (ARENA) to explore potential pathways to decarbonise the steelmaking process at Port Kembla Steel Works.<br><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Partnering with the University of Wollongong and CSIRO, BlueScope has completed a 1,000-tonne biochar trial in its No. 5 Blast Furnace, Mr. Scott said, but the biochar supply chain was challenging.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;The supply chain does not exist,&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;We need to continue to explore opportunities to develop a supply chain of biochar in the future, such that we have a viable supply chain that we can bring biochar, potentially, in over our berths.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/arena.gov.au\/knowledge-bank\/?keywords=Port+Kembla+Steelworks+Renewables+%26+Emissions+Reduction+Study\">In a series of reports published on the ARENA website<\/a>, the research highlighted that the blended material could successfully bind. However, it noted that further research is still required to assess transport efficiency, handling procedures, and operational changes to BlueScope\u2019s Pulverized Coal Injection (PCI) Plant.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h6 class=\"wp-block-heading\">$400m \u2018rebirth\u2019 for Kiland, formerly  Kangaroo Island Plantation Timbers<\/h6>\n\n\n\n<p>Interest in Biochair is booming.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.afr.com\/companies\/energy\/can-kangaroo-island-bounce-back-with-nation-s-largest-carbon-project-20230505-p5d5up\">Last week the Australian Financial Review reported<\/a> on <a href=\"https:\/\/kiland.com.au\/\">Kiland\u2019s <\/a>interests in \u2018Nobrac\u2019 \u2013 said to be the world\u2019s largest biochar project.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Kiland is the company reborn from Kangaroo Island Plantation Timbers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Under the proposal, <a href=\"https:\/\/indaily.com.au\/news\/2022\/06\/17\/burning-ambition-ki-plan-to-turn-trees-into-charcoal\/\">standing timber destroyed by bushfire in early 2020 will be converted into 900,000 tonnes of biochar over the next five to 10 years<\/a> \u2013 turning the ASX-listed group into a major player in Australia\u2019s green economy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s a common-sense solution. We\u2019re supportive of it, and we hope it works,\u201d according to Michael Pengilly, the mayor of Kangaroo Island. \u201cThe only alternative is to burn it out.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The first commercial biochar production is set for September 2023, with the market for the carbon-rich product said to be a soil improver on agricultural lands.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Kiland executive chairman James Davies told the AFR that the company \u2013 which has specialised in forestry and lost most of its market value after the bushfires \u2013 has been working on what to do with its burnt plantations for 18 months.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-rich is-provider-embed-handler wp-block-embed-embed-handler wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<div class=\"youtube-embed\" data-video_id=\"2yE2OXHybo0\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Green Industries SA: Bushfire clean-up. In a strange way, it\u2019s been facilitated by the circumstances we find ourselves in.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Interest in carbon markets has surged since the bushfires.
