a Hybrid Timber Floor System Could Transform Construction"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Prototypes for a new hybrid timber floor system, developed by<a href=\"https:\/\/dialogdesign.ca\/\"> Dialog Design<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ellisdon.com\/\">EllisDon Construction<\/a>, will be tested at<a href=\"https:\/\/web.fpinnovations.ca\/\"> FP Innovations<\/a>, a non-profit research institute at the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ubc.ca\/\">University of British Columbia<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.msn.com\/en-ca\/news\/canada\/new-hybrid-timber-floor-system-that-could-be-used-in-tall-buildings-to-be-tested-in-b-c\/ar-AA1cpUuE\">As reported in the Vancouver Sun<\/a> the flooring systems could be used in future \u2018tall timber\u2019 buildings.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI designed them from a sketching,\u201d said Thomas Wu, whose portfolio includes Vancouver projects such as the<a href=\"https:\/\/dialogdesign.ca\/projects\/fairmont-pacific-rim-hotel-and-residences\/\"> Fairmont Pacific Rim Hote<\/a>l,<a href=\"https:\/\/dialogdesign.ca\/projects\/living-shangri-la-toronto\/\"> the Shangri-La Hotel<\/a>, and the Shaw Tower.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-gallery has-nested-images columns-default \/><\/figure>\n<\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>In 2018, Wu and Craig Applegate from the Canadian Dialog Design Architecture firm began exploring ways to use mass timber in buildings more sustainably and economically.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Presently, the &#8216;biased&#8217; <a href=\"https:\/\/www.iheartradio.ca\/am-1150\/news\/time-for-mass-timber-and-prefab-b-c-eyes-changes-to-bias-in-building-code-1.19706911\">building codes in British Columbia only allow the use of mass timber in structures up to 18 storeys high<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Wu and his team saw this as a challenge to overcome.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The standard method of constructing taller mass-timber buildings involves stacking 18-storey blocks on top of each other and adding connecting support columns and beams.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-gallery has-nested-images columns-default is-cropped 105-storey buildings<\/h6>\n\n\n\n<p>However, they knew there was room for a more efficient approach.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Dialog team realised that the main cost of building materials for a project was predominantly in its flooring systems.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Following a peer review by Dialog&#8217;s teams across Canada, they partnered with EllisDon Construction in Ontario. It is hoped that HTFS could become a global solution for all types of construction.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h6 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Update on testing<\/h6>\n\n\n\n<p>Since mid-2022, smaller versions of these flooring systems have undergone tests to gauge their resistance to fire and load-bearing capacity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>These full-sized prototypes are thinner and incorporate steel tendons, allowing them to be much longer than the existing mass-timber designs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Traditional mass-timber panels usually limited to six to 7.5 meters in length, demand costly supporting beams, posts, and intricate joinery.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In contrast, this new system accommodates panels that span 12 meters.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Such lengthy panels are ideally suited for commercial buildings and other structures demanding wide-open office and gathering spaces.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Two 12-meter long, three-meter-wide prototypes of these floor panels will soon be dispatched from EllisDon&#8217;s facility in Stoney Creek, Ontario, to FP Innovations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-rich is-provider-embed-handler wp-block-embed-embed-handler wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<div class=\"youtube-embed\" data-video_id=\"FaHHyOBvBzg\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"FPInnovations: We have the forest industry at heart\" width=\"696\" height=\"392\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/FaHHyOBvBzg?feature=oembed&#038;enablejsapi=1\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/div>\n<\/div><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\"><em>FPInnovations will be responsible for the testing. Footage courtesy of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/@fpinnovationsvideos\">@fpinnovationsvideos<\/a><\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h6 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Rigorous testing will commence in mid-June 2023<\/h6>\n\n\n\n<p>Upon their arrival in Vancouver in mid-June, a rigorous testing phase of 12 to 16 months will commence.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Mark Gaglione, the building, and material sciences director at EllisDon, asserted, \u201cThis is where we transition from a research project to the next step of commercialisation.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>During the testing phase, the panels&#8217; responses to various weights, vibrations, and performance changes over time will be monitored.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Although the focus has been primarily on tall buildings, Gaglione suggests these panels could also be employed in shorter buildings to decrease carbon footprints.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Historically, the prohibitive cost of supporting beams and intricate joinery made timber an impractical choice.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>However, Wu contends these panels will lower the cost of mass timber and decrease the labour required for their installation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The time needed to construct a floor with this system will be comparable to that of traditional concrete and steel flooring systems.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This could make wood a more viable, cost-effective option for construction, heralding a new era in sustainable building.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Prototypes for a new hybrid timber floor system, developed by Dialog Design and EllisDon Construction, will be tested at FP Innovations, a non-profit research institute at the University of British Columbia.
