{"id":7397,"date":"2023-06-14T11:47:18","date_gmt":"2023-06-14T01:47:18","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/woodcentral.com.au\/?p=7397"},"modified":"2024-10-21T20:31:05","modified_gmt":"2024-10-21T10:31:05","slug":"sodra-clt-worlds-greenest-mass-timber-plant-wows-aussies","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/woodcentral.com.au\/sodra-clt-worlds-greenest-mass-timber-plant-wows-aussies\/","title":{"rendered":"S\u00f6dra CLT: World&#8217;s Greenest Mass Timber Plant Wows Aussies"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Australian delegates on the <a href=\"https:\/\/woodcentral.com.au\/report-australians-travel-to-norway-sweden-for-timber-tech\/\">WoodSolutions and TDA Study Tour of Sweden and Norway <\/a>have found the scale of S\u00f6dra&#8217;s newest cross-laminated timber plant \u201cdifficult to comprehend.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Inaugurated in March this year, the facility has successfully increased mass timber production tenfold.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>On the final destination on the first day of the tour (June 11 to 17), S\u00f6dra&#8217;s Business and Product Development Manager Ola Landqvist provided guests with a tour of the V\u00e4r\u00f6 facility described as \u2018the world\u2019s greenest mass timber facility.\u2019<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The new plant can process 100,000 cubic metres of timber annually to build 4000 apartments. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It operates off green energy produced at S\u00f6dra&#8217;s neighbouring pulp mill at V\u00e4r\u00f6.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-rich is-provider-twitter wp-block-embed-twitter\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\"><p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">The S\u00f6dra CLT Plant in V\u00e4r\u00f6backa has been described as the World\u2019s Greenest Mass Timber Plant \ud83d\udd02<br><br>Here it collects offcuts for <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/bioenergy?src=hash&amp;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">#bioenergy<\/a> \ud83e\udeb5<br><br>It uses renewables to power one of the largest manufacturing facilities in Europe<a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/sodra?src=hash&amp;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">#sodra<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/masstimber?src=hash&amp;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">#masstimber<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/NetZero?src=hash&amp;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">#NetZero<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/JDilTgQUWT\">pic.twitter.com\/JDilTgQUWT<\/a><\/p>&mdash; WoodCentralAu (@WoodCentralAU1) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/WoodCentralAU1\/status\/1668788727781654528?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">June 14, 2023<\/a><\/blockquote><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script>\n<\/div><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\"><em>Footage courtesy of Clarissa Brandt from <a href=\"http:\/\/www.timberqueensland.com.au\">Timber Queensland<\/a><\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/woodcentral.com.au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/06\/AUS-Sodra-presentation-ENG-2023-06-12.pdf\">In 2021<\/a>, S\u00f6dra calculated that it had a 14.5 million tonne net-positive climate impact by combining total forest stocks, substitution effects, and supply chain emissions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>S\u00f6dra claims that CLT produced by its new plant only has an impact of 34 kg CO2 e\/m3, which is an 80% reduction compared to typical concrete frames.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>To meet supply, 350 timber trucks haul processed timbers supplied by three trains set up to deliver daily timber supplies.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>According to Landqvist, the facility is \u201ccompletely fossil-free inside the gates\u201d, with 75% fossil-free trucks hauling timbers less than 100 km to the port in Varberg.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"CLT Line Sodra F2\" width=\"696\" height=\"392\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/muk5GVhwls8?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\"><em>The plant was opened in March 2023. Footage courtesy of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/@prodajaledinek\">@prodajaledinek<\/a><\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>S\u00f6dra is Sweden\u2019s largest forest owners\u2019 association, with 52,000 forest members participating in the collective, covering 2.8 million ha of forest area. The frame consists of glue-laminated timber (GLT) combined with CLT, produced by S\u00f6dra. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The remainder of the building is made from structural timber and cladding.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>At the plant&#8217;s launch,<a href=\"https:\/\/www.sodra.com\/en\/global\/wood\/news\/newsletter\/2023\/sodra-inaugurates-new-clt-factory\/\"> Lotta Lyr\u00e5, CEO of S\u00f6dra, said.<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cToday is a proud moment for S\u00f6dra&#8217;s entire organisation \u2013 members, employees, and customers are continuing to work together to build stronger value chains that enable us to meet society\u2019s demand for sustainable and innovative products from family forestry.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Inside the facility, 14 people operate on two shifts to produce two mother or master panels an hour, with two shifts a day producing 30 panels a day.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>All offcuts go to S\u00f6dra&#8217;s bioenergy plant, which produces more than enough energy to power the CLT plant fully.
