(Photo Credit: The Sydney Morning Herald)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Two informative points have emerged from the debate:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Minister for the Environment Penny Sharpe noted no agreed facts concerning the Great Koala Park.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But said the park &#8220;was an extremely important contribution&#8221;.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h6 class=\"wp-block-heading\">1. The Great Koala Park announcement is imminent&nbsp;<\/h6>\n\n\n\n<p>After consultation with conservationists, the forest industry and its workers, an announcement is imminent.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The minister&#8217;s statement said: &#8220;The environment faces a range of challenges, as does the timber industry&#8221;, which suggests a pre-determined outcome.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This will be made clearer when the name of the NSW government-nominated consultant is announced.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h6 class=\"wp-block-heading\">2. There will be no neutrality with the NSW EPA<\/h6>\n\n\n\n<p>On past performance under the Coalition government, there will be no neutrality by the NSW EPA.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The bias will start with the nature of the qualifications of the consultant.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>There is always the generally time-honoured issue with consultants.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The money holder for the piper gets to write the tune.&nbsp;<strong>And, of course, there will not be a silviculturist within cooee!<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-rich is-provider-embed-handler wp-block-embed-embed-handler wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<div class=\"youtube-embed\" data-video_id=\"3M7SzS_5PlQ\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"When The Government Asks For An Independent Consultation | Utopia\" width=\"696\" height=\"392\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/3M7SzS_5PlQ?feature=oembed&#038;enablejsapi=1\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/div>\n<\/div><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\"><em>Footage courtesy of&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/@workingdogproductions\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">@workingdogproductions<\/a><\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>The most interesting part of Sharpe&#8217;s speech was that&nbsp;<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.abc.net.au\/news\/2023-06-25\/auditor-general-report-finds-epa-and-forestry-corporation-fail\/102518114\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">she had had a &#8216;shot&#8217; at NSW Greens MP Sue Higginson&#8217;s press conference on the NSW Auditor&#8217;s Report into forest regulation.<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Her point was: The Greens should have met with the minister on the release of the Report and invited her to the press conference, given her long-term advocacy for the Great Koala Park.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But politics is again in play here.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>So it is big money if anyone cares to review the requests for campaign donations associated with this issue.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"634\" height=\"357\" src=\"https:\/\/woodcentral.com.au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/07\/Penny-Sharpe.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-8225\" srcset=\"https:\/\/woodcentral.com.au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/07\/Penny-Sharpe.jpg 634w, https:\/\/woodcentral.com.au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/07\/Penny-Sharpe-600x338.jpg 600w, https:\/\/woodcentral.com.au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/07\/Penny-Sharpe-300x169.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 634px) 100vw, 634px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Penny Sharpe is the minister that will oversee the decision.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h6 class=\"wp-block-heading\">NSW Nationals have &#8220;bet each way&#8221;<\/h6>\n\n\n\n<p>Another observation is the comments of Sam Farraway, MLC Nationals; (Photo Credit: Mark Banasiak Office)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Sarah Mitchell, National Party, on May 31, moved a Notice of Motion, which the ALP supported, that noted: &#8220;native forest harvesting in NSW is carefully managed under a robust regulatory framework to ensure the right balance between environmental protection and forestry operations&#8221;. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>She admitted that she was new to the subject, and for a first attempt, her speech read well. In 2022 she was accused of being &#8216;woke&#8217; by her opponents. <\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h6 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The June 27 Auditor-General Report<\/h6>\n\n\n\n<p>The Legislative Council commented on the NSW Auditor-General\u2019s report on June 27 following its tabling of the forestry regulation on June 22. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.parliament.nsw.gov.au\/Hansard\/Pages\/HansardResult.aspx#\/docid\/HANSARD-1820781676-92308\/link\/2268\">A fair report<\/a>, but <a href=\"https:\/\/www.parliament.nsw.gov.au\/Hansard\/Pages\/HansardResult.aspx#\/docid\/HANSARD-1820781676-92308\/link\/2268\">Sue Higginson MLC asked a question without notice <\/a>seeking to paint the Forestry Corporation of NSW into a corner for failure to ensure compliance with its contractors.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The charitable environmental NFPs had been using the issue with approaches for donations as June 30 approached.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Nature Conservation Council has run two Facebook entries with large donation buttons high in the content using the Higginson view of the Report.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-rich is-provider-twitter wp-block-embed-twitter\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\"><p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Thanks to a generous donor, if you donate before midnight this Friday, June 30 your impact will be doubled (up to $20,000)! Most of these were in low-risk areas. This is just one piece of our campaign to end native forest logging in NSW finally&#8221;.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h6 class=\"wp-block-heading\">So, how can we assess the political state of play?<\/h6>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Assessing the political state of play.<u><\/u><u><\/u><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The ALP government is seemingly playing a straight bat with a strong, detailed election commitment.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The impact of that election pledge will depend on how the NSW EPA ideologues seek to influence the ALP Cabinet\u2019s decision with their submissions. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>There has been plenty of anecdotal evidence of their approach in the last three Coalition governments.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The National Party says they are committed to a native forestry industry, but their performance overall is poor.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Missing in action, some might say. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>The current mob of MPs is not like their predecessors in, say, the Greiner government. <\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>To be fair, the same assertion might be levelled at some members of the Federal National Party parliamentary room.&nbsp; <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>One only needs to start with the current parliamentary leader who nailed his colours to the anti-forestry mast when he was Minister for Agriculture in the Morrison government.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A similar remark might also be aimed at the current Liberal Party Deputy. Both, as ministers, took advice without question or consultation. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>To be scrupulously fair, this assertion can be applied to many Parliamentary Executive Members and their staff. If it\u2019s not on the front page, then they are not interested!&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Tom Saunders, ABC\u2019s metrologist, said Sydney faced its coldest May in 53 years. The mean temperature \u2013 average of all minimums and maximums \u2013 was sitting at 15C, the lowest it has been since 1970.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Well, this is where the NSW businesses and workers in native forestry industry are sitting \u2013 out in the cold, regardless of the mean temperature.
