{"id":8656,"date":"2023-09-03T20:21:23","date_gmt":"2023-09-03T10:21:23","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/woodcentral.com.au\/?p=8656"},"modified":"2024-10-21T20:27:50","modified_gmt":"2024-10-21T10:27:50","slug":"myanmar-secret-bank-accounts-allegedly-fuel-conflict-timber","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/woodcentral.com.au\/myanmar-secret-bank-accounts-allegedly-fuel-conflict-timber\/","title":{"rendered":"Myanmar Secret Bank Accounts Allegedly Fuel Conflict Timber"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>The Myanma Timber Enterprise (MTE) is allegedly working to open secret bank accounts at the Myanmar Economic Bank (MEB) weeks&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.bing.com\/search?pglt=41&amp;q=junta+run+banks&amp;cvid=2279c87319f341a9a3170963fcb2c374&amp;aqs=edge..69i57j69i64.2883j0j1&amp;FORM=ANNTA1&amp;PC=U531\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">after the United States imposed sanctions on two banks with links to the military.<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In June, the US imposed sanctions on Myanma Foreign Trade Bank (MFTB) and Myanma Investment and Commercial Bank (MICB).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>According to Brian Nelson, the US Treasury Under Secretary for Terrorism and Financial Intelligence, &#8220;Burma&#8217;s military regime has leveraged state-run access to international markets to import weapons and materiel, including from sanctioned Russian entities, to continue its violence and oppression.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The US alleges that the military facilitated international trade by revenue-generating state enterprises such as MTE and the Myanma Oil and Gas Enterprise (MOGE).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-rich is-provider-embed-handler wp-block-embed-embed-handler wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<div class=\"youtube-embed\" data-video_id=\"BjOQ2FXYtVs\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"US targets Myanma oil and gas enterprise officials for first time | Latest News | Top News | WION\" width=\"696\" height=\"392\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/BjOQ2FXYtVs?feature=oembed&#038;enablejsapi=1\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/div>\n<\/div><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\"><em>The sanctions directly target oil, gas (and timber) enterprises connected to the regime. Footage courtesy of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/@WION\">@WION<\/a>.<\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>MOGE provides the regime with its biggest single source of revenue by selling oil and gas abroad.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In addition, the MTE generates large sums in US dollars by selling timber abroad.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Now Wood Central reports that the regime plans to open secret bank accounts to smuggle conflict timber.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.irrawaddy.com\/\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">The revelations come from&nbsp;<em>the Irrawaddy<\/em><\/a>, a news website run by Burmese exiles living in Thailand overnight.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.irrawaddy.com\/news\/burma\/myanmar-juntas-timber-enterprise-eyeing-secret-bank-accounts-to-bypass-sanctions.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">They allege that the MET<\/a>, already sanctioned by the European Union, the United States and the UK, is working to use MEB bank accounts to bypass international financial sanctions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-rich is-provider-embed-handler wp-block-embed-embed-handler wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<div class=\"youtube-embed\" data-video_id=\"LmkhZoT7dAQ\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"EU sanctions 11 Myanmar military leaders over coup and repression\" width=\"696\" height=\"392\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/LmkhZoT7dAQ?feature=oembed&#038;enablejsapi=1\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/div>\n<\/div><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">The EU was the first to sanction the military-controlled government in 2021.
