(Source: Goldman Sachs).<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h6 class=\"wp-block-heading\">AI will change the construction industry &#8216;forever&#8217;<\/h6>\n\n\n\n<p>As reported by <a href=\"https:\/\/canada.constructconnect.com\/dcn\/news\/technology\/2023\/07\/artificial-intelligence-and-the-future-of-modular-and-pre-fab-construction\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Construct Connect<\/a>, AI is already disrupting the North American construction industry.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>John McMullen of the US&#8217;s Modular Building Institute (MBI) says AI is changing the construction industry &#8220;forever,&#8221; he said. &#8220;But don&#8217;t all technologies do that?&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Mr McMullen said AI&#8217;s potential in modular is virtually unlimited.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;Building plans can be optimised for the capabilities of specific manufacturers.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;The quality control and plan approval processes could radically change,&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;Efficiencies could be found and implemented to reduce building times and material waste.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h6 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Architects and building designers are using AI software to design buildings<\/h6>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/woodcentral.com.au\/find-out-how-architects-use-ai-in-mass-timber-building-design\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Last month<\/a>, Wood Central reported that architects and building designers are now using &#8216;Midjoinery&#8217; software to design mixed-use mass timber buildings.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-rich is-provider-embed-handler wp-block-embed-embed-handler wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<div class=\"youtube-embed\" data-video_id=\"wePG8v5orjg\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"How AI &quot;Artists&quot; are making money with Midjourney right now\" width=\"696\" height=\"392\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/wePG8v5orjg?feature=oembed&#038;enablejsapi=1\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/div>\n<\/div><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\"><em>Midjourney AI has been described as the \u201cChatGPT for artists\u201d and has taken the design community by storm in recent months. Footage courtesy of&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/@MangoStreet\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">@Mangostreet<\/a><\/em>.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>The real question, Mr McMullen said, is how modular builders and designers implement AI to deliver modular&#8217;s benefits best.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;I think it&#8217;ll be a gradual process, but, eventually, AI will be a valuable tool for the industry.&#8221; <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/woodcentral.com.au\/australian-building-designers-now-use-ai-in-timber-projects\/\">The CEO of the Building Design Association of Australia (BDAA)<\/a> revealed that building designers also use AI and automation in Australian projects.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Chris Knierim is the CEO of the national peak body for the building design community and revealed that &#8220;AI is already having an impact on the design industry.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>According to Mr Knierim, it can assist in generating design options, analysing data, and optimising building performance.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;It can quickly process vast amounts of information, helping designers make informed decisions and explore innovative solutions.&#8221;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;AI-driven simulations can evaluate designs&#8217; environmental impact and energy efficiency, leading to more sustainable and eco-friendly buildings.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"576\" src=\"https:\/\/woodcentral.com.au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/07\/Chris-Knierim-is-the-CEO-of-the-Building-Design-Association-of-Australia-the-peak-body-for-Building-Designers-Wood-Central-1024x576.jpg\" alt=\"Chris Knierim is the CEO of the Building Design Association of Australia, the peak body representing Building Designers in Australia. (Photo Credit: Supplied).<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>In the US, MBI executive director Tom Hardiman mentioned that the exact impact of AI on modular construction is still being determined<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;We&#8217;ll have a better idea in a few months once we start receiving requests from people to speak at the next World of Modular, the MBI&#8217;s annual conference, in 2024.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Craig Mitchell, founder and principal of Blackbox Offsite Solutions Ltd, said AI&#8217;s most significant opportunity in modular is on the design side.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;It shows a lot of promise for creating iterations of modular design that can adapt to different site characteristics and constraints.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Puyan Zadeh, a research associate in the civil engineering department at the University of British Columbia, says AI and intelligent automation significantly benefit the different stages of offsite construction.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For example, Ms Zadeh said AI could be used at the manufacturing stage for design and quality control and to implement robotics.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h6 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The power of robotics<\/h6>\n\n\n\n<p>AI can also improve logistics. It can forecast deliveries, anticipate transportation problems and optimise how prefab components are loaded and arranged on trucks.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And when it&#8217;s time for prefabs to be installed, AI tools can optimise the process by determining the best number of workers, amount and type of equipment, and by organising work crews.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/woodcentral.com.au\/discover-how-robots-are-revolutionising-prefab-construction\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">In June 2023,<\/a>&nbsp;Wood Central reported that modular housing company BloKlok uses labour-less robots to manufacture modular housing in Sweden.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-rich is-provider-twitter wp-block-embed-twitter\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\"><p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">BoKlok&#39;s previous wall-producing machinery is for sale! Footage courtesy of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/@InfactCoNz\">@InFactCoNZ<\/a>.<\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Still, smart robots with sensors can assemble standardised prefab components with everything the correct size.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The future of construction lies in combining robotics, AI and other technologies such as automation, computation, software, sensing and networking, said Helen Goodland, Head of Research and Innovation at Scius Advisory, a Vancouver consulting firm.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;Advanced manufacturing, as it is known, is already being done in many other industries.&#8221; <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;More construction companies need to get on board now too&#8221;. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;One local company that has already started is Intelligent City.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Oliver Lang, co-founder and CEO of Intelligent City Inc., said his company takes what he calls a product-based approach to creating housing solutions that are faster and more efficient to build, as well as carbon-neutral.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;We have developed a fully integrated housing technology platform called Platform for Life,&#8221; Mr Lang said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;It integrates design engineering, AI, parametric software, robotics, and mass timber building systems.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;The result is a scalable platform with scalable, repeatable, adaptable building solutions.&#8221; <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;It is a fundamental departure from today&#8217;s custom-made, cost-prohibitive broken incumbent building solutions.&#8221;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Forestry is amongst the industries most impacted&nbsp;by the push towards Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Automation.
