according to the official communique.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/woodcentral.com.au\/brazils-amazon-summit-push-for-un-like-oversight-of-forests\/\">Yesterday<\/a>, Wood Central reported that Columbia was pushing for developing a &#8216;Marshall Plan&#8217; in the fight against climate change.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>President Lula is pushing for Brazil to lead global efforts to end deforestation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;We are going to COP28 with the aim of telling the rich world that if they want to effectively preserve the forest that exists, they need to pay money not only to take care of the canopy but to take care of the people who live under it,&#8221;  <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Wood Central understands that this refers to the European Union&#8217;s law prohibiting firms from importing goods linked to deforestation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The countries are under increased scrutiny\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/woodcentral.com.au\/worldwide-impact-eu-passes-law-banning-deforestation-products\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">following the introduction of the European Union Deforestation-free Regulation (EUDR)<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Under the EUDR, European companies must prove that their products do not originate from deforested or forest-degraded lands, or they may face substantial penalties.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The new law bans the sale of coffee, cocoa, cattle, palm oil, soy and wood connected to deforestation &#8211; and has been criticised by developing countries most impacted by the new legislation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Leaders from Bolivia, Brazil, Colombia, the Democratic Republic of Congo, Ecuador, Guyana, Indonesia, Peru, the Republic of Congo, Suriname, Venezuela, Saint Vincent, and the Grenadines signed the communiqu\u00e9.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h6 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Amazon leaders fell short of a zero deforestation commitment<\/h6>\n\n\n\n<p>Yesterday, the eight countries of the Amazon Cooperation Treaty Organization (ACTO) \u2014 which include Bolivia, Brazil, Colombia, Ecuador, Guyana, Peru, Suriname and Venezuela \u2014 adopted a &#8220;new and ambitious shared agenda&#8221; to&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/news\/2023\/8\/9\/what-did-amazon-nations-agree-upon-at-the-summit-in-brazil\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">save the sprawling South American rainforest<\/a>&nbsp;with the announcement of the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/news\/2023\/8\/9\/amazon-nations-launch-alliance-to-protect-rainforest-at-key-summit\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Belem Declaration<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The agreement fell short of committing to zero deforestation by 2030.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Instead, it will create an alliance to pursue individual deforestation goals by protecting Indigenous rights, with regional cooperation on water management, health and sustainable development.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-rich is-provider-twitter wp-block-embed-twitter\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\"><p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">&quot;There is a pledge to protect indigenous rights &#8211;
