{"id":9821,"date":"2023-08-17T16:02:31","date_gmt":"2023-08-17T06:02:31","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/woodcentral.com.au\/?p=9821"},"modified":"2024-10-21T20:27:57","modified_gmt":"2024-10-21T10:27:57","slug":"queensland-wont-follow-wa-and-victoria-on-native-hardwoods","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/woodcentral.com.au\/queensland-wont-follow-wa-and-victoria-on-native-hardwoods\/","title":{"rendered":"Queensland Won&#8217;t Follow WA and Victoria on Native Hardwoods"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>The Queensland Government is &#8220;focused and highly engaged with the timber industry,&#8221; with the supply of &#8220;softwood and hardwood&#8221; pivotal to meeting the State&#8217;s population surge.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As Prime Minister Albanese joins hundreds of ALP powerbrokers at the 49th Labor conference in Brisbane, the Queensland Labor Government &#8220;will not be going down a path like other states.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>That is, according to Queensland&#8217;sQueensland&#8217;s Minister for Agricultural Industry Development, Fisheries and Regional Communities&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/documents.parliament.qld.gov.au\/com\/SDRIC-F506\/C20232024-784C\/SDRIC%20Proof%20Transcript%20-%202%20August%202023%20-%20Estimates%202023-2024.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Mark Furner at an Estimates committee.<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Minister Furner answered a question posed by Tony Perrett, the LNP Shadow Minister for Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/woodcentral.com.au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/08\/Tony-Perrett-is-the-member-for-Gympie-and-the-LNP-Shadow-Minister-for-Agriculture-Fisheries-and-Forestry.-Photo-Credit-The-Courier-Mail-Wood-Central-1024x576.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-9823\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Tony Perrett is the member for Gympie and the LNP Shadow Minister for the portfolio. (Photo Credit: The Courier Mail)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Wood Central understands that the comments concern Western Australia and Victoria, where State Labor Governments have mandated forest bans in state forests.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Minister Furner is responsible for developing the Native Timber Action Plan charting the future of Queensland&#8217;s hardwood industry &#8211; Young<\/a>, which conducted an economic impact assessment of the hardwood forest industry in over four different NSW regions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image alignwide size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"571\" height=\"379\" src=\"https:\/\/woodcentral.com.au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/08\/image002-40.jpg-1.webp\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-9824\" srcset=\"https:\/\/woodcentral.com.au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/08\/image002-40.jpg-1.webp 571w, https:\/\/woodcentral.com.au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/08\/image002-40.jpg-1-300x199.webp 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 571px) 100vw, 571px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">The Ernst + Young Report reported that northeast NSW supplies two-thirds of the state\u2019s hardwood timber and made an important contribution to the state\u2019s economy<br><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>The hardwood industry has been subject to uncertainty, with the 1999 South East Queensland Forests Agreement (SEQFA) leading to the &#8220;end of long-term sales permits&#8221; (Dated 2019). <\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>According to Dr Sarra&#8217;s deputy, Graeme Bolton, the department acknowledged that the programme had failed in 2019. Dr Sarra reported that the department is working with stakeholders to pave a new approach.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;What I can report,&#8221; Dr Sarra told the Estimates Committee, &#8220;is that we are in continuing dialogue with those in the timber industry about contemplating the best ways forward, recognising the challenges that lie ahead.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;We accept that public servants do not have all the answers within the department.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&nbsp;&#8220;It would be nonsensical for us to imagine that the answers exist within the department and that we can embrace or traverse those challenges,&#8221; Dr Sarra said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Regarding future timber supply, &#8220;without being in a sturdy, respectful and robust dialogue with those stakeholders because their interests are our interests.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;We are prepared to try as much as possible to get on the same page as them to embrace those challenges together.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Nationally the ALP is divided over native forestry,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/woodcentral.com.au\/victoria-bans-state-native-forestry-harvesting-to-end-2024\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">with the &#8216;hastened&#8217; decision by the Victorian Government to accelerate its closure led to criticism by federal Labor counterparts.<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"683\" src=\"https:\/\/woodcentral.com.au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/07\/LEAN-is-a-powerful-faction-in-the-ALP-movement-1024x683.webp\" alt=\"LEAN is a powerful faction within the Australian Labor Party.
